"Micro-hybrid" mod idea

Okay, folks, this mod concept is not special to a TL but since that's what I've got, ('05 TL-S) I'm floating it here...
I'm interested in a "micro-hybrid" mod, in which all of the electrics, including dynamo etc. would be powered by an on-board plug-in lithium battery, taking the alternator out of the mix, thus adding whp/fuel economy. This concept could theoretically be done with any vehicle, but I haven't heard of it before so maybe I'm missing something. I'm conceptually-minded but not technically proficient. Would have the work done by someone who is. But what does Acura-land think about this idea? Any merit? I realize that feasibility would depend on the electricity needed and charge time, but for a regular vehicle that merely uses the alternator to charge an old-fashioned nickel battery, that shouldn't be an issue, right? Am I missing anything? Any take on how much hp gain could be realized?

Wow. Distributor. Not alternator or 'dynamo'. New to this forum so it will quickly be apparent that (1) I'm not a mechanic and (2) am not aware of any way to edit or delete posts, if there is one.

not enough HP gain to be perceptible.

Cool idea OP!!!!!

some one recently turned their MDX into a propane burner instead of running conventional fuel!!!
propane is cheaper and has a higher octane level!

Not to sure if your idea is feasible, but it is awesome nonetheless!!

The car is distributorless - it has a coil on plug ignition.

How would you charge the lithium battery? Remove it each night for charging? I don't think you'd gain enough to be worthwhile by eliminating the alternator. In the domestic world, it is common to drop the accessory belt to pick up a 10th or so in the 1/4, so 10 hp at best on a 300HP 3400lb car.

An engine is an air pump and the TL is fairly efficient at pumping air in stock form. Your best gains are going to be found by finding ways to pump more air in and get more air out. Once you maximize the intake and exhaust paths, your only other options are to make the engine bring more air in and expel more air (camshafts and ported cylinder heads) or forcing air in - turbo/supercharger.

Well, technically the '04-06 6MT was dubbed the "sport" model, where as the 5AT was dubbed the "base" in the parts guides, so OP isn't totally off. It's semantics really.

Not as bad as guys who run around with AMG and M3 badges on their C300's and 328i's.

Try running it without the belt for a few minutes and see if it feels any different. I'd imagine you'd need a big enough battery to give you any range it would negate the power/fuel savings. Not to mention it would probably take incredibly long to recoup the negligible fuel savings.

05 TL-S??? This must have been the one off of that craigslist ad.

But seriously, you are better off reducing weight, aero mods, removing power steering and tuning for fuel economy.

Like others have said our cars use a coil on plug ignition system so getting rid of the distributor is out the window. I won't recommend trying to power the TL off of another battery, our TL's are hungry for juice, the stock alternator is 130A. The cost of getting 4 or 5 lithium batteries with a capacity over 130Ah would not be cheap...

hp and economy? turbocharger
