It runs!!!!!

I have a stock tune adjusted for the ID1000's and it's CEL free and idles nicely even before going through the idle learn procedure.

Gotta go get it registered and then inspected and as long as the tranny doesn't give me issues, I'll start breaking it in.

I have the valves setup pretty loose which are a little noisy and the piston slap isn't as bad as I expected. I had a minivan that was much worse.

What's up with the trans? Did you make any changes to it while it was down or just standard concern for it holding the power?

 

Dam you're getting fast at this stuff, bet it feels good to drive it with the engine you built by yourself. What compression ratio did you end up with and what is the octane of the fuel in your area ? very curious of how much boost you will be able to run.

I had a lot of "might as well" moments, one of them was getting a set of M-Factory straight cut gears for 3/4 along with doing the 3rd gear syncro tsb service. I've done a lot of teardowns of motorcycles like this and it wasn't all that different and having the service manual was very helpful, but you never know.

Very gratifying to hear an engine sound so good that I spent so much time on.

I can't take the credit, seeked the assistance of Mr Marcil up in Montreal like you and your son. Will learn eventually but I wanted to get some time behind the wheel before the snow flies.

I also am using the advice of Andy Gerzand and my ballpark C/R is going to be in the 10's. With my combination of internals and transmission, I am going to push it a bit further than I originally planned.

We have 93 octane around here and I have an alky injection system already installed.

 

Took it for a ride around the block and found I have a tiny oil leak and the bad part is it's the oil pan.

Also found that the radiator cap was not fully seated so the temp went up to 250 for a brief moment.

Other than that the Spec clutch is just like stock and the transmission was silky smooth. The whine from the straight cut gears is no where near as loud as I expected and the 3rd gear syncro change removed the notchy feel.

Off to DMV tomorrow to get it registered.

 

Is the Spec clutch much easier to engage and use? I'm pretty good with the twin disk but, miss the smoother engagement.

 

As he said, it feels just like stock. Ive been using the Spec 3+ Non-SAC for 3 years now and its great.

Can I use my Assco flywheel with the Spec clutch ?

 

Thanks, unfortunately I have a oil leak and need to pull the transmission. Ordered new flywheel bolts and hondabond, hopefully will be here mid week and I can have it back on the road by the end of the week.

Dominic up in Montreal is feeding me tunes. I'm likely only going to break it in before having to put it away for the winter.....

To clarify, does that mean it has to use the stock DM flywheel, or you need a different Spec specific flywheel?

I always wondered if AASCO fw would work with SPEC clutch since spec makes no fw for my car.

 

In order to use an OEM Dual Mass Flywheel with a SPEC clutch, you have to be sure to order the SAC (self adjusting) version of the clutch so that you will receive a sprung friction disk and an OEM style pressure plate with upgraded fingers only for slightly more clamping force but still in an OEM pressure plate form factor and friction disk diameter. Here is a note regarding which part number to choose for this situation:

"These clutch kits retain the factory ratcheting system and may be used with the original dual mass flywheel. For SPEC billet clutch and flywheel packages that eliminate the OE design, scroll to the '-2' part number kits"

EX: PP & Disk part # SA401 through SA405, including H & F.





However, if you own a SPEC singe piece aluminum flywheel and want to use either an OEM sprung disk &/or pressure plate (because you want less rotating mass but don't necessarily need more torque holding capability) or another clutch manufacturer's sprung disk &/or pressure plate assembly, then you can also so that. Please see the following statement on the spec website for the 3G TL SPEC single piece aluminum flywheel offering which explains that:

"These kits are a complete redesign of the restrictive and weak factory SAC pressure plate assemblies and feature our billet pressure plate option standard. Our aluminum flywheel will accommodate a factory style clutch or any of our 7 billet clutch stages."

Or, you can just be like me and run a full Spec Clutch system, Single piece flywheel and non-SAC pressure plate with sprung disk SA-403F-2!


EX: PP & Disk part # SA401-2 through SA405-2 (2004-2006 J32A3 TL Base), including H & F as well as SA711 through SA715 2007-2008 J35A8 TL-S)

If you're running the Tilton twin disc with the stock throwout assembly, then it's night and day difference. The pedal feel is as good if not better than the Tilton with their hydraulic release bearing.

Aside from the chatter, I hated the plate rattle.

I had a problem with the transmission. The 6th gear bearing had to be replaced along with some of the surrounding parts just to be safe.

Expecting last part today.

Although this winter has been mild in upstate NY standards it's still too cold and I have my DD using the garage. So the TL is in a portable garage next to the house, engine is in the garage and the tranny is in the basement.

Hoping to get back at it in a few weeks.

Just for storage to keep the snow and stuff off of it. I put down a tarp and pushed it on top of it so there is no condensation at all.

We're almost done with Feb and the weather starts to get better in March. Unless the winter is extended because of the mild winter we've had.

 

Finally back to work on the transmission.

Ended up with an issue with the 6th gear bearing seizure. Not sure exactly why this happened but I replaced that end of the gear/syncro/bearings. Checked all of the clearances, mainshaft thrust and differential preload. Everything was good.

Not going to be able to do much this weekend, snow predicted on Monday, but with any luck, will be getting the car back in the garage soon.

 

I would think it got damaged while being installed ? did you push only on the inner race while installing it ?
Glad to see you back at it, we are busy with the TL building a custom intake manifold to put on the new motor to try and even out the cylinder imbalance issues we are having

 

The bearing that went bad was a roller bearing that didn't totally seize but the collar inside the bearing would not come out of the gear. It almost looked like it starved for lube as the syncro had some signs it overheated.

Thankfully the shaft was undamaged and I replaced more than I really needed to.

Can't wait to see what you come up with on the intake manifold.

 

Transmission is back together and should get my AD Engineering manual tensioner tomorrow.

Sister is coming to visit and it's fathers day weekend so probably won't get much done this weekend, but hope to have it back together by next weekend.

 

FYI, the AD Manual timing belt tensioner wasnt designed for our 2nd gen engine blocks. The threaded portion is quite long enough to be safe in ADEngineering's opinion. If you need more clarification text me.

When you are waiting for parts, you look on the web for stuff too often. I already have the pulley bracket installed and modified my cover so this was just another piece of overkill.

 

I conracted Andy Divers and he said that he wasn't aware of this and that there should be plenty of threads.

The package didn't arrive today but should arrive tomorrow.

BTW, he never sent me one.

 

Part arrived today. When I measured the stock tensioner fully extended, from the front of the mounting hole to the end of the shaft is around 60mm and this is how much thread is left. I'm confident that it'll work. I checked the part numbers for my 06 and an 08 Type S and the part numbers are the same.

I am still battling with my transmission which has honestly taken the wind out of my sails. Haven't looked at it for over a week now.

I've got a used transmission arriving sometime this week and at this point, haven't decided if I want to send out my existing transmission to get it looked at or just pull the dog gears, sell them and the rest of the setup and move to something else.....

We'll see after I get it swapped and running. Maybe my enthusiasm will return....
