Is a JPipe Really Necessary?

Is a J Pipe really necessary? Let's say I want to do a "True Dual" exhaust. I don't want to run an Xpipe because they cause more rasp than the alternative, an H Pipe. So in thought I wouldn't need the J Pipe to collect the gasses coming out of the front and rear cylinders. Im thinking that it wouldn't harm anything to run directly from each precat, into two HFCs, into the H Pipe and out two Mufflers. Thoughts? Does the piping need to be the same length?

An X-pipe keeps the exhaust pressure and pulses equalized.
This.
