Yup it is....

I swear to god Slippry needs a exercist or something to change his luck. When he called and got the car here I figured OK, my screw-up , one of the keepers poped out and the intake valve dropped (would have been the first time in 9 years since that has happened to one of my builds), but no, instead a freaking retainer cracked, stock spring on a stock retainer, this is not like it was a extra strong spring or anything, this is the first broken retainer I have seen in 12 years (and then it was because a kid put heavy springs on without upgraing the retainers), so Billy, get your Karma strieght, get a exercist, something will ya.........

Head is trash as the valve was driven into the casting like a axe into the water jacket, new piston and rings in bound qand re-hone of the cylinders, luckily there did not seem to be any deep scratches in the cylinders and they can be cleanly honed out.

Nice build!

It sucks to be on the road waiting for a flat bed.

You looking for any more builds? (potential customers?)

After seeing your ride at HIN DC I told Paul to talk to you at the show, I think you guys spoke but I'm not sure. Your not doing HIN this coming week? I was planning on going but to short of a notice.

Ouch, I would advice pressure testing your valve springs next time you do a build. It will help you avoid that problem next build. See what happens sometimes, is that if whoever compresses the spring the wrong way when removing them will weaken it, if even amount of pressure isn't equally distributed. Just asked me it took me 3 Honda motors to final break down and ask someone why it would occur. As I hate cars say's (Been there broke that)

As a matter of fact I do test all the springs before installation and use the correct valve spring compressor for these heads, I have rebuilts at least 15 sets of these heads in the last year alone (and many other heads over the last 20 years that I have been working on cars) without issue, the only thing that COULD have been done to prevent this would have been to magnaflux or x-ray all the retainers (not likely to be done).

Didn't mean to offend your build. But I was just sharing my screw ups.

NP, this was just one of those things that happens no matter how cautious you are, parts are made and installed by imperfect people (and I know I only walk on water during cold winters), all you can do is fix it and move on, it's part of the job.

Like Billy said the motor was originally going to someone who lives in west tenn, so I am glad it happened locally although weather it would have happend to the other person or it was billys bad luck is up for debate :P

wow.. I can't believe the retainer snapped.. question.. would this have happened in any case? or can the wear and eventual failure be attributed to the work done? Not to offend the excellent work done on the engine but I was just wondering if you think the retainer cracked and exploded like that due to excessive high loads or if something else could have caused it.

Also.. what's next? new retainers & springs all around?? this thread is nuts.

Retainer and keeper failure is only caused by a few things.

Bad part. It happens more than you would think and is the reason I run stock retainers even in my car with stiffer valvesprings.

Worn or damaged valve stem where the keeper locks in.

Valve spring bind. Caused by the coils binding by too much lift, the wrong spring, or wrong valve.

Too much spring pressure for stock keepers/retainers.

In rare cases, valve float can cause the keeper to release itself.

Chances are in this case it was a bad part. Keep in mind a lot of the big manufacturers have moved production to China and it has caused a dramatic decrease in reliability of parts. In some cases big names are going out of business due to these issues.

Not to go on a rant but this China stuff really pisses me off. I bought a set of $1,200 headers from a small American business. After talking to the guy he said he was going to stop making new parts because two months after he designs and markets these really awesome things, there's a cheaply made China knockoff for 1/8 the price. I don't have a lot of money but even if it means saving for an extra month to not support China ripoffs I will do it. Ok, I'm done.

You know what makes things suck even more....

Company A, a JDM company, has parts made in China and imported to Japan and packaged in Japan, the parts can then be labled Made in Japan even though they were actually made in China.....

I'll probably stay NA for now until I gather some $$$. Right now I really enjoy the torque, but because the engine is prep on FI, it lacks of top end it feels like it losses it's breath on high RPM... maybe stock intake, cat and exhaust system has to do with it...

btw, as of now i only have headers, S2000 injectors, walbro fuel pump, "some" upgrades on the internals other than that everything is stock... can't wait to get it turbo'ed...

NA J35A2 sound BAD ASSSS I swear ! It's more like coming from the engine sound than coming from the exhaust sound of thing...

Those scenarios all make sense.. I'm just paranoid that this could happen to anyone of us.. I do reliability work (when not on Azine ) and I can say for certainty that it's not the problem of the Chinese / Taiwanese mfg's but the U.S. companies.. Most large scale U.S. companies want to make the most profit by using the cheapest contracting ODM, which typically means if they make it cheap then the quality & reliability of the components are cheap as well. The best cost saving tactic is imitation and then to cut out most of the reliability & quality testing. This is where we get screwed..

Is it really bad enough to pull it out? Every forged piston I've run has piston slap when cold. Is yours doing it all the time or only when cold? I trust your judgement, not questioning that, just wondering how bad it is.

It is cylinder 4, then one that the valve went on and it is all the time, it probably would not be a problem, I have heard worse, but it anoyes the hell out of me enough and with boost coming I really don't want anything to be out in any way.
