J Pipe and Ground Clearance

Hey AZ

Got an 04 AT TL with an AEM CAI and mid muffler delete.

Since I changed the fuel to air ratios, every now and then I get a check engine light. Every mechanic says its just because of the CAI. Anyways, I was thinking of installing the J-Pipe, though I'm concerned about my car passing the emissions test (Texas). I already have to beg whomever is running the test to let my car pass despite the engine light.

Also, if I do the modification, do I need anything else other than just the j-pipe kit? I keep reading about the racing pipe, and I'm not too sure how it factors into the j-pipe installation.

Also, I live in Dallas. Some of the roads here can get pretty flood-like during a bad storm. I'm worried about the ground clearance issues I keep reading about. I'm guessing if I drove through a deep puddle, would it ruin not only the j-pipe but the car itself....? I'm fairly new to car mods so, go easy on me, and be as detailed as you can. Thanks.

The TL has no business going through deep puddles. You will not affect your j-pipe but do run a risk of hydro-lock if the puddle is deep enough. Just don't drive through rivers or large puddles and you will be fine...

Alrighty. How does the racing pipe factor into the J-Pipe? It seems a lot of people are using the two together.

Also, what about the emissions test?

Well the race pipe goes right behind the j-pipe and replaces the factory third cat. It "should" still pass the emmissions test but will fail the visual inspection if they notice and are strict.

I would make sure what code your check engine light is throwing before a mechanic tells you whats going on. I have a Injen CAI with a Comptech Cat back and I pass just fine in Dallas. Find out what your code is...A CAI should not throw a code unless improperly installed which is really rare.

Ah, you're in Dallas? I had my CAI installed by "Jotech Motorsports". Been there? Also, how do I find what code? Sry... I'm a noob. I pay people to do car shit for me cause I'm so inept.

Autozone and so on should rea your code for free. I know who Jotech is and I am not a fan of them. I have heard some stories from them so I tend to avoid them. Plus they charge a lot.

You can do it in the driveway if you really wanted too. its ilke 6 or 7 bolts as I recall when I was under the car last time. Hardest part is breaking the old bolts loose.

Totally agree with PB Blaster!!! Best bet is to spray it pretty heavy about a week ahead of time and then a good spray every day for a week before the install. Bolts come right off then! Trust me, I just installed my XLR8 j-pipe about a week ago now.
