J-pipe difference Question - Stock vs. Aftermarket
I was just wondering what the difference was in changing the stock J-pipe. Any performance gains or is it just sound. My car has about 74k miles now and maybe it's time to change - but I'm not sure. I am totally clueless on what it does.
Also, is there a difference in the TL-S J-pipe vs regular TL?

there are 3 different j-pipes around, RV6, ATLP and XLR8.
The XLR8 one IMO is the best because it uses exhaust scavenging to get the best gains for the money, however it is the most expensive. You do get some very good power gains from these, with the XLR8 one you get at peak power 8 WHP and in the 3000-45000 RPM range as much as 30 WTQ gain!

Quick question for you guys with an aftermarket J-pipe...will it make you fail an emissions test if everything else is stock (pre-cat, cat, exhaust, etc.)? I've been looking for something to add a little extra punch in the mid throttle range, and I think a j-pipe might just fit the bill. Also, is it tough to install, or a fairly easy bolt on application?

As csmeance stated - "The XLR8 one IMO is the best because it uses exhaust scavenging to get the best gains for the money, however it is the most expensive" because it is the best designed and constructed. The XLR8 j-pipe is made by Billy Boat Performance Exhaust (click here).
The j-pipe is, hands down, the most hp producing mod that I ever did to my car... except for the TL Diet.

All else equal, no change in emmissions if you add an after market J-Pipe.
Why would it? Same pre-cats, same 3rd cat, no fooling around with O2 sensors, etc. So no emissions change.
Pretty straight-forward simple install. If your old bolts are rusted, that can be a bitch.

205 ft.lbs. - 172 ft.lbs. = 33 ft.lbs. Gain at 3000 RPM
Here is the graph from a 2006 Acura TL Base 6MT with the ATLP (VERSION 1) jpipe. I have the XLR8 jpipe, which is nearly identical to the ATLP Ver.1. The slight difference in design between these two is that the XLR8 has longer primary lengths. so in my opinion, the XLR8 should match (and probably do better) this graph. This is why I choose the XLR8, because the XLR8 had the longest primaries for scavenging and the fact that the XLR8 is made by BillyBoat.
I can say from my first hand experience (at least in my case), that my gains "lived up" to what is shown in this graph.

Sorry, I should had mentioned that the graph is not mine. I saved it off of Acurazine or the ATLP website.
I never looked for, or heard about, dyno places in Houston. I am sure that there are places, I just never checked myself. Let me know if you try one, and I might do it too.

Wow! Great feedback guys! So based on which aftermarket j-pipe you replace = better performance?
Hmm..does that mean less mpg?
surlynkid - I think what inaccurate is saying is that the TL j-pipe is the same as the TL-S j-pipe. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Acuraoemparts lists two different part #'s for the base and type-s j-pipes.
Base: 006 18210-SDB-A01 PIPE A, EX. 1 2008 TL 441.00 330.75
Type-s:
006 18210-SEP-A52 PIPE A, EX. 1 2008 TL 259.92 194.94
Why the hell is the type-s j-pipe so much cheaper?

Just do it.
ATLP, RV6, or XLR8 J-pipe
Everyone recommends it. Then just do it. Whichever that fits in your budget.

Aren't the XLR8 and ATLP J-Pipes the same price? I think when I called ATLP last wk they quoted me $399.00 and I just check XLR8 and they're $400.00.
Quick question if the OP doesn't mind...is the race pipe worth it? Also, is there that much of a performance increase b/t the RV-6 and XLR8 to justify the $85 difference?

keep in mind that the XLR8 J pipe hangs lower then the ATLP and RV6. i have the XLR8 and i love it but its the lowest part on my car. i just lowered it last week with Tein SS. i have no finger gap, the tires are pretty much flush... maybe a slight tuck. i have yet to scrap it but im sure i will end up scraping the J pipe eventually cause it sits so low.

His drop is probably at least 1.5" front and rear. If you're scared about it being scraped, you'd rather go get the ATLP V2 J-pipe as it is drop friendly, but XLR8 has said it shouldn't have a problem unless dropped over 2" as the XLR8 J-pipe will show slightly more gains.

The Jpipe is a great mod to do. It works best with the exhaust and PC deletes to compliment it, but even with a stock exhaust it makes a difference. I have the RV6 Jpipe, which makes good power as well, but I will probably be switching to either the ATLP or XLR8. Their design is better and hence, the gains are too.
Inaccurate, are you saying you think the XLR8 Jpipe gave you more performance than the PC deletes? If so, damn And you are still running the stock exhaust...get an exhaust already! Lol jp.

The XLR8 Jpipe and PCD complement each other. The Jpipe bumps the power in the lower rpm range and the PCD bumps the power in the upper rpm range.

I have the exact same car as you, your telling me if i buy this i will actually feel the speed and the car will actually perform. I'm not the richest guy here and i don't want to put $400+ for something that wont make a difference. I want to finally be able to beat my friends 05 Jetta GLI 1.8T chipped that he worships.
