I believe the TL uses a wideband o2 sensor so a cheap gauge wont work with the factory sensors.

Since when is an AFR gauge "ricey"?

People are taking the rice thing a whole lot too far. AFR monitoring is a vital component of tuning your vehicle and keeping the engine running at a safe pace.

In general loading your car up with gauges is what the boy racers do, and in my opinion is rice.

I think it depends more on your age group... when I was 17 I was all into the loud exhaust, gauges, and decals. Now I think it's totally ghey and would never want that crap in/on my car.

I'm not knocking anyone because I did all these things once upon a time too.

i'm 27 with a good job, nowhere near the immaturity of a 17yr old and i have gauges.. I have aftermarket parts that require gauges to monitor the car. how would you like to walk into a cockpit of a 737 and not see any gauges?? hmmmm some things are there for a reason.

to be honest, i don't like gauges either. thats why my air/fuel gauge is installed but loosely thrown into my glove box, out of sight. by the way, i solved my problem for those who would like to know. my problem was that i hooked up the a/f gauge like told so by autometer. our factory o2 sensors are not capable of putting out a reading for the a/f gauge to work. it came down to purchasing the autometer o2 sensor kit and of course a lil welding, and voila, the outcome of this setup is a working but also more realtime readouts since the signal is not through the ecu but straight from the installed autometer sensor. by the way, the whole reason for this ordeal for me was that i first noticed with a new set of plugs that after the first thousand miles driven on them, they were indicating extremely lean. that worried me as i soon found out about a free fuel pump mod dealing with bumping up voltage to the stock fuel pump. anyways, i really wanted to see if this would correct my lean-issue. so i went and bought another freaking set of denso's , along with the guage and sensor. so that is how this ordeal came to be for me. just thought i'd share my scenario just in case anybody was curious, since others are so nice to share their learning experiences too.

I agree with you in some aspects. a cockpit of a 737 or 747 requires all those gauges because it needs it. an Acura TL with 270 (258hp ASE rated) do not... even with a S/C TL with 4~5 lbs of boost isn't all that much to really need a gauge.
If you need it for paranoidal reasons, they get one. Our vehicles isn't highly boost and don't really need one. That's basically my point...

You could just go with a datalogging solution too (e.g. serial port in the glove box and hook your laptop up to it). Or if you wanted to monitor it day-to-day you could get a remote LCD display that would fit in the top front pocket under the radio in the TL (just flip up the door to keep tabs, flip it down to hide the display).

e.g. something like this
