G-Timer Results 05TL A-Spec
OK....as several may know...I asked about the G-timer by Passport recently and if it worked...how...ect. Well....I got one finally and am in the process of properly tweaking it in (you have to know vehicle weight, drag coefficient, frontal area, pitch/roll characteristics, aprox drivetrain loss-15% avg loss manual and 20%avg loss automatic, which takes time to figure properly but fairly simple to enter in unit and get started. Most of the stuff comes out to the same as default...but I did have to adjust vehicle weight up a few hundred pounds in the settings as default was too light. Here is some initial runs I did last night....still decyphering the info honestly....but here it is nonetheless: Maybe more people will get one of these bad boys for compare/contrast? The more people that get one with 3G - the better we can tweak this in....no kidding...simple to use! I got the G-Timer 2 - but I was offered the G-Timer version 1 for $49 (I just bought an Escort from them and it came with a discount coupon offer for the version 1....I just got the version 2 for $119.00 instead, which was discounted too!) I do note...this is a first shot at it....so dont the results yet...I am told this thing is pretty accurate right out of the box and the more tweaks/settings you put in - the better it is! Here is a few screen captures...conditions were fairly cold (pre-snow)....wheel spin was a problem (didnt heat tires)...and finding somewhere safe to cram it down to 100mpg at times was a prob too (not necessary to go this fast to get times...just set that as my mark as I figured our cars would do under 100mph in the qtr mile?)
Only engine mods I have is Comptech exhaust and AEM Intake? At least now I can very easily and cheaply tell if what I do make a difference and how much. Wish I would have had base figures from totally stock....

Those numbers look very realistic, 14.7 @ 96mph is just about where I would expect your car to be.
A 2.33 60's is decent, but some of the 5AT CL-S guys have gotten very low 2.2's. I know the ETC is a PITA for the new TL's, so maybe experiment with some lower tire pressures and different launch procedures to see what works best.
Nice thread.

The specs I used were like 3814# or something like that (would have to re-check as I tossed the scratch paper here in my office yesterday night-but the settings are obviously accessible through the sceen for review....I will check) and the default was set at 3500# or something like that. I do note that the curb weight of the vehicle will vary on Automatic or Manual trans slightly as well as adding your own personal body weight to that and I also added an "avg" fuel weight and adding any weight of any additional equip you may have installed. I have a concrete and asphault gravel pit co. near our office and was thinking about running it over their scales, if they would allow me, just to get a dead on accurate reading with like a half tank of gas or something? The closer you get these tweaks into place...the better/more accurate the HP readings will be....other than that.....the times are all not dependant on this as much (according to the directions). They also tell you in the directions exactly how to fine tune it to dead on accurate (they tell you which setting to mess with) if you are at the track and having trapped times to compare with. I guess they are accurate within .01 secs or something right out of the box....but you can tweak exact at track with formal trapped times. Now thats pretty close right out of the box though? I guess the HP readings are more dependant on settings than the times are? BUT...they do tell you that the HP readings are fairly accurate too...just that the "tweaks" effect that reading more than any other. The tweaks are simple....you put in the trans loss...generally about 15-20% depending on auto or manual, the vehicle weight, a setting for your suspension (for example, obviously a caddy would have softer settting than us? And they give you what setting to use for what type of vehicle in most all cases) The only thing you need to figure out is your vehicle weight, the frontal area (expained in directions), and drag coefficient. They give you the math formula to use to figure this out....or a test method (time it takes to get from 60mph to 50mph in neutral on a flat street with no wind). Either way....they give you the fomulas to use and you just plug in your figures and come out to a setting number to plug in. That was the thinking part of the set-up...gotta use your brain there a bit (I know...sux!) but it is way harder to explain than to do. The curb weights of our vehicles are published info (obviously you could seek out a scale like I am going to to be dead on accurate) and the other info will be dependant on your set up....A-spec kit or not..stock or upgraded suspension, ect. After those are in the machine....your HP readings will be dead on accurate too! I think I have most of the settings pretty much tweaked in my case.
Note...if you prefer to measure wheel horse power (WHP instead of BHP)...it states to change the trans loss setting to zero and that is what you will get then in the HP readout. I have mine set to figure BHP....so it takes into account the trans loss on the automatic trans. of 20%.
I also got the G-timer V2...which saves the last 10 runs in memory and lets me bring it inside and hook it to my PC and get the information downloaded to PC (with optional download cable) or you can do it on a laptop right in your car. The G-Timer V1 just does 1 run and you can review it on the screen only....BUT....is a bit cheaper, if cost is a factor.
