Was expecting more from K&N Drop in Air filter

I recently spoke to a friend of mines who is all up into tuning cars and knows everything and anything about them. The one thing I was looking for was better gas mileage. He says get a K&N drop in air filter and that "should" give me better gas mileage, so I did. Ive gone through a full tank already and dont really see the difference. I dont know maybe it will take time. Just wanted to let fellow AZiners know so they dont go and waste their money. Ill keep everybody posted upon any changes.

Thumbs down

Don't expect much from a drop in!

Yeah the K&N is more free flowing but it also lets in more dirt!

Disconnect the battery or pull a fuse to reset the ECU, maybe then you'll feel a slight change at high rpm, once the computer adjust to more air, but I doubt it.

Otherwise get a CAI, you'll feel a difference then!

I think people are associating intake mods with exhaust mods. Exhaust frees up power and gas mileage because the engine has to pump the exhaust out. Limiting the air going into the motor won't effect gas mileage, only power. It gives you the potential to get worse mileage if you drive it very hard because the engine can now use more air. A cold air intake may or may not improve mileage and if it does it's only due to the computer possibly (and I mean possibly) adding more timing when it sees colder air. The throttlebody determines air flow between idle and everything short of wide open. Wide open is the only time the filter would have an effect.

there is another thread about gas millage... I live in NYC, traffic city I should say... if I keep the car at 55 on the highway (which is 5 over the speed limit) SLOW ASS HELL, I get 24mpg... but I don't so after a CAI and driving with my toes rather than my entir leg I get 19mpg (going wot often but not as much as before)

Note I used to get 13mpg prior to 2 things, 1 oil change to amsoil synthetic and the fujita cai... driving style is the greates gas saver

search recent thread Royal Purple Lab results in gen2
that stuff was done at 7500 miles

Mobil1 HIGH MILEAGE is the old Mobil 1
check label carefully for FULLY SYNTHETIC

Mobil1 and K&N filter very similar- I like K&N for extra design features and easy remove nut welded on the end

I bought a K&N drop-in air filter and I have not seen the difference. Gas milage is about the same. The only way I see myself saving money is not having to buy a new air filter everytime it needs changing.

Would spark-plugs play a part in the gas mileage as well?? I'm thinking about getting a CAI as well, but I'm not even sure if that would help either.

Can anybody shed some light on this??
Thanks!

Import Tuner did an intake test about a year ago on an RSX-S. They did a K&N drop-in filter for sh*ts & giggles and they actually came out with -1hp and -3tq! Interesting, huh.

Spark plugs play a huge roll in your gas mileage. Without them, you won't be very happy with the numbers.
