Exhaust drone

I just bought an 04 6spd TL that came with aftermarket exhaust with some bad deep bass heavy drone. I can't find a brand on any of the components to help me know what I have. From what I have read here I have determined it has an aftermarket J pipe, is missing the third cat and goes into a 3" catback with a resonator and 2 mufflers. I was wondering if anyone on here has found a mid muffler I could add to remove drone or if not would going to a stock catback cause much of any performance loss?

I bet if you added a second resonator it would kill a lot of the drone.

I have an update, I went back to the dealer today and had them install the 3rd cat the car was missing. They were apologetic and took the cat off an 07 TL they had on the lot. The drone was tamed only slightly(I didn't expect too much out of a tiny cat). I have read conflicting posts on this forum about adding resonators with some saying it doesn't matter if you add 2, 3 or 4 the drone will still be there. I figured I would have to add a mid muffler that or trade a member for stock exhaust. I like the sound of it in the city but have to drive in 4th gear or live with the drone in fifth or 6th on the freeway.

Well that sucks. I have no third cat, mid muffler or resonator. And no drone.

Nick what mufflers are you running as I suspect that is my biggest issue since I do have cats and a resonator.

The reason its loud man, is the 3 inch exhaust tubing ! What type of mufflers do you have , are they aftermarket? A cheap fix, is restore the originial piping diameter 2.25 " at a muffler shop, at restore the orginial mufflers, if these are aftermarket mufflers. Your drone will be gone.

This exhaust looks like the Tsudo exhaust so in that case it should be 2.5" and I apologize it looked pretty big to me and I must have over estimated its size. I guess there is only one way to know for sure crawl under the car with calipers. I wish I had the original mufflers. I bought this car used from a dealer with none of the stock parts. The car also came with a Fujita CAI which looks pretty standard as far as CAI go, I am glad its not a short ram or I would be looking for a stock air box.

Most people with drone add a resonator to kill it.

My ATLP has drone but I enjoy it, I paid for it so I want to hear it.

Hope you get it fixed though, I can understand it being annoying at times.

^ Your drone is different. Its not a bad drone, but a good one.

You are better off looking in the black market for a use oem exhaust.

You can also swap the mufflers out for something like Walker Quiet Flow mufflers, they still out perform OE mufflers but aren't much louder.

I agree with good and bad drone, if it only droned under heavy acceleration I would be happy. Cruising down the freeway and getting home with your ears ringing for no reason is bad.

I will look into the Walker Quiet Flow mufflers, however I won't be making a decision for a few weeks...gotta wait another week for my noob status to wear off before I shop the black market.

You can also look for a used OEM tL exhaust or TL type S exhaust, you could possibly get one for a deal in the black market.
