ECU hack?

Ok, over in the navi/electronics area there are people reverse engineering and hacking the navi system to allow all sorts of things to be modified from the stock setup. With Hondata obviously taking there sweet time on a reflash, can someone please educate me why it is so difficult to do a similar thing to the ECU and give us perhaps vtec engagement at 4200rpm and maybe rev limiter cut in at 5000 rpm? seems like it would be feasible with some code hacks, what is problematic about this? Hopefully someone can enlighten me, because I know just enough about this stuff to be dangerous.

hondata is working hard to bring you a reflash. trust me, wait for it. its not far off at all.

I would like to believe you, but its been over 3 years that they have had to produce something viable. I am mainly asking the question to try and educate myself as to why this task is so difficult. I am not looking for something that is tuned specifically for a certain set of mods, but that would be nice. I only want a couple hundred rev sooner vtec engagement and a slightly higher rev limit, seems like it should be a simpler hack than the OK button defeat on the navi? I understand the reflash process will be more complicated than loading a different DVD into the navi drive, but what about the software modifications. Are they that much more difficult?

You can try hooking up a piggy back ECU like the E-manage ultimate. If it's sucessful, you would be able to change the Vtec engagment point and rev limit and much more.

The 03+ Accord people have used it successfully and they have a very similar engine and ECU. I have bought the 03+ E-maange harness but I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I think it would be worth a try.

MichaelBenz had a fairly reasonable explanation in the other thread on this.

I will be following your experiment, er.........I have been following your experiments! Is that 3.5 rolling yet?

Probably, although there have been three or four talking about the same damn thing.

what has to understood is what all goes into reverse engineering the tl's ECU. not only does hondata have a lot going on, they have to deal with several different configurations ect. its extensive and tedious. its not like honda gives hondata all the inside info on the ecus they have spent millions of dollors engineering. hondata has to literally sift through lots of data. first off they have to build a wire harness to even get into the ecu. thats not even taking into account the different types of ecus that might be used on the tl ....ie different years, at, 6mt...ect.

if you are looking for a quike fix, and are experienced enough, you can try a piggyback for those things you listed like vtec crossover, but rev limiter prolly is not editable with a piggyback. i would not mess with fuel ect.

I think the details on how THIS PARTICULAR ECU is programmed have a LOT to do with why it's so hard. It's not like the NAVI hack AT ALL and it's not like the other (pre-3gen) systems. Rather, like all other CPU-based systems, this one incorporates other aspects of the car as well. To give an analogy, the current Honda hacks are like a 486 computer processor in that the ECU in those processors are "single threaded (crunch numbers only and THEN move on to video display)" however, the processors in these 3G are "multi-thread". Not only do they crunch numbers and process video AT THE SAME TIME, they also prioritize things and commuincate between different systems. The current Honda hacks don't do any of that stuff. Unless you can program assembly code in your sleep AND have an in-depth knowledge of how Honda uses that information, your ONLY option is to simply "wait for it" IMHO of course!

I think at least one KNOWLEDGEABLE tech tried the vtec advancement and got a nice big "BOOM!" out of a car he was trying it on. Do YOU want to be the next "victim"? LOL, turned out to not be that serious but the tech made a wise decision and backed out of the project.

Ah, the heck with it. Send me a check for $25K and I'll start working on this tomorrow and you can have the first one. PS - It may well still go BOOM!
