Does CAI help with highway gas mileage?

Yeah, i know...most people are only looking for power, but i have a second home that's about a 120 mile drive each way, so gas usage now matters more with these freakin prices. I've been reading a lot on here along with some Google searches, but haven't found the info i want. I'm also wondering if i'd have other issues, like the water in the filter causing engine damage. Not looking to solve one problem while creating another. I've mostly tried to read about Fujita, Injen, and AEM. I've seen advertised that Injen gives mid-range power, but not sure of the others. I don't need cruising noise, but don't mind it if i'm on it. Mainly trying to improve mileage along with any power gains that come with it due to my increased driving. My car is stock, other then K&N filter.
Any info on each of these, along with links with more info is greatly appreciated.

an aftermarket CAI won't help with gas mileage. your stock intake system is more than adaquete.

people get CAI's just because they can. noise makers.

in theory; yes improving how the engine breathes will net mpg gain.

in real world; not so much.
She's heavy at 3500lbs.
while this weight affects in city take offs more than cruising on the highway.

with cruising on the highway; our cars stock can reach up to 34mpg.

if you're just puttering around town; i can see why you would need better gas mileage.

One way to combat this would be to let the car go on a diet.

but if you're traveling 120 miles; I would expect that to be mostly freeway/highway driving where our cars SHINE in mpg there.
try freeway driving at 55-60 mph

I remember when I first bought the car my average mpg at fill ups was about 17. Mostly city driving.

I didn't notice any change until I installed the CAI and j-pipe. Averaging out 19 mpg.

At home, it's mostly local driving, which isn't economical, but no big deal. And yes, car does get good mileage on the highway, but i'm usually in the fast lane. I cruise at around 80 for a portion of the trip. Usually like getting where i'm going, sooner rather then later. Might have to do with my "lead foot" when i was young. Do any of these CAI's actually add any noticeable power on their own though? Noise means nothing to me unless power comes with it.

not without extensive bolt ons...after you free up everything else, then adding a cold air intake will benefit...
but on its own...its just a noise maker.

and I can attest to the 55-60 being to slow! lol
in short; nothing will dramatically increase MPG without altering the way you drive or making the car lose weight

It is hard to believe the claims of 12-15 HP when i see it advertised. Prefer hearing it from people who've used them. Won't be giving the car a diet, and don't see my driving habits changing. Maybe i'll start drafting behind big rigs instead of always passing them?!

Ha...noisemaker!
Reminds me of way back when when i borrowed my fathers '73 Malibu, which was a turd on wheels, to drive to a school field trip. It had a 307 small block, which was rated at 115 HP. Can you imagine that little HP in a Chevy v8? It was mainly due to low compression and smog equipment, which was far from advanced. So i turned over the air cleaner lid and got some serious noise from it! You can't polish a turd though, so it was still a slug. Sounded great though, and being in HS, it was better then taking the bus!
Then, to get anywhere near spinning the rear tires...yeah, RWD...miss that...my friends would lift the back end while i power-braked it. After doing this numerous times while my dad was home reading the paper, i heard noise in the rear end. So i pulled the cover off the carrier and found ring bolts had fallen out and were getting chewed up by the ring and pinion. So, that was the end of that rear...and car. Junked it and bought a truck.

Hope it's not frowned upon to add these off-topic stories to the post...

Change your diving habits.. I get 21-22 mpg with mostly highway driving. My fiancee gets 25-27 with mostly highway and some city.

I accelerate kind of fast, she drives like a grandma.

Drive more efficiently. I filled up this morning, so I reset my MID and noticed I managed a reported 30 MPG on my daily commute. This was with a drive through, several red lights, two stops, a few WOT pulls, and just over freezing ambients. It's not hard to get mid 30's on the highway, just have a hot engine, avoid the brakes, and stay below 60. Low 40's are possible with a long drive and 6MT. The 5AT's are at a big disadvantage, however.

How you drive all the time matters WAY more than brief full throttle acceleration. Heavy acceleration isn't a problem unless you're accelerating way past the speed you want to go and slamming on the brakes. If you're going to put energy in to accelerate 3500lbs of steel, try and use it.

Drove from huntsville to outter banks nc at 80 and was getting 33mpg average. Now i get 27mpg when i used to get 30-32 to work each day. RIP mileage.

a CAI seems completely worthless on our cars.

I used to average about 27 mpg 80/20 mostly highway. That was after I took my intake off, with the stock intake you definitely have more low end power. Now I average 19.5 mpg in my S4

I just went on a 250 mile trip, mostly highway, but not all. I checked my actual mileage with a calculator and got 26 mpg. The dash showed 25, so i'll take that. Still drove 80ish for a good portion of the highway driving.

Stock setup is pretty well designed as is. do the free setup and just throw a new drop in filter and remove the intake resonator. Gives you the CAI sound. with $0 spent

pretty much need more than just an intake to see any gains. J pipe and other exhaust mods will help. Your car wont intake more air than it can easily fart.

^i just made that up btw.

you might gain .001 mpg from removing the intake assembly and airbox.

Thumbs up

CAI do not add any on a stock setup. I have pulled about 10 dyno runs in my day on a few different cars for shits and giggles. You gain no hp or tq but a loud "BAAAAW" sound lol Your stock motor can only take in so much air. More power does come with breathing better but if you want MPG you need to first make sure your car is running its best. Use top tier PREMIUM fuel, clean your throttle body(i took mine off to clean it better), clean your injectors if you use crap fuel and perform an upper engine clean like seafoam. Carbon buildup will kill your engines power due to carbon deposits on your piston, valves and intake. Clean it out and you should be at 30 mpg on hwy. DO IT! Makes a huge difference.

Only time I actually kept track of a highway trip I was going 80-85 driving aggressively and the dash said 25MPG, when I filled it up I calculated 27. I imagine if I kept it around 65 and didn't touch the throttle I'd get 30+ but fall asleep. My last daily driver got 15MPG in that same situation so I'm not complaining. CAI made no discernible difference on my car other than a little noise. If I ever go catless or port the intake manifold it might help.

Totally serious question, how can I get 35MPG while driving 90 in 3rd or 4th gear so it pulls hard?
