Do I need to use High octane fuel?

I know the manuel calls for 91+ octane fuel..which I have been using. Can I use 87 or 89?...My neighbor runs 87 in her 07 Tl..I have an 04.
THanks for any input.

Because our engines have a high compression ratio, it needs 91 or higher octane to prevent knock.

our ratio is 11:1. that's race car status.

No definitely not. There are already a lot of documented cases of the TL pinging on 91 octane...I would run the best gas you have access to. Do a search here and you'll find a long thread about it.

your neighbor will find out the hard way if she keeps running the lower octane fuel

The car will run, as its still gasonline which is combustable and not water being added.

However it will run horribly, with less power, and possible detonation issues, which over time could cause piston failure.

As mentioned, this J32 engine is 11:1 compression. It is equipped with knock sensor and will retard ignition timing with lower octane gasoline. However, it can only retard timing so much and may not be adequate. Otherwise, Honda would mention it in the owners manual and advertise it as such.

I knew this engine required premium fuel when I purchased it, but the great V6 gas mileage compensated and option for MT. That combo is not easy to find in sports oriented sedans.

You should have known this before purchasing if that is a deal breaker for you.

really, why is this such a thing that needs to be decided?
Is there a lot of money to be saved on the difference between 87-91?
and if that's the reason...how about 2 less sodas a day that do nothing but poison you, and maybe skip on that useless junk snack and you can easily compensate for the price of 91 octane.

your neighbor is as dumb as they come.

(ive never used anything below 92-93, ever),
