Custom Intake Mod: Still In Progress
Custom Icebox Mod
I didn't know the dimension of stock intake piping and will need larger intake coupler. I'll have to order in few more parts from ebay or home depot to finish this custom intake mod.
Parts Used - K&N Filter, Velocity Funnel, Intkae Coupler

its velocity funnel and topic about its functions have been discussed alot in the forum. maybe it hasn't been discussed in the tl section

this is cheap home depot/ebay mod. idea is from comptech's icebox for tsx's with just bit larger intake box and snorkel where intake resonator resides. i'm doing it for functionality of icebox. no need for looks since it sits inside the bumper.

IMO - the icebox is one of the best designed intakes. the funnel allows the pickup of a true cold air intake... but the sealed box allows a pressurization which increases density of air and also seals the filter off from the elements. props to you bro, i bet the gains will be better than AEM.
the nest step is to cut off the tube from the box to the throttle body and somehow fit a larger area cone filter inside the box, then you would have awesome gains.

after driving around for a day, throttle response has been improved with little more torque. also the funnel sits right behind the front bumper opening. no need extend the piping.
i like the icebox design because it gives better low end torque compared to cai plus better throttle response. sr is useless since it sucks in the hot air from engine bay.
i'll keep this mod until comptech makes icebox application

great idea..the velocity stack has showed improved power with all different car brands..my friends integra Type-R made 4 more whp with just the velocity stack install on his aem intake..

The injen intake filters come with a velocity stack in them,
"In 1999 Injen designed the first urethane filter with a built in velocity stack for added performance. The Injen Technology Research and Development Team calculates each filters mesh and pleat count for each specific application during the development stages. The Injen cotton gauze element allows cleaning and durability for 1000's of miles to come"

Great concept but I'd stick with a CAI until there is a better/cleaner execution of the like set up! There is a risk of this thing falling off or something, less complexity=less chances something goes wrong!
But hey, mad props for trying something different bro! Good luck!
I don't know why Comptech sit on their ass with the TL ice box for so long. The Supercharger kit does come with an ice box of some sort but it's placed inside the engine bay by the wheel well. Now that I think about it, no, it's not really an icebox but a short ram intake with a heat shield. This describes that set up more accurately! Btw most blown guys tossed that set up in favor of a custom CAI -more blower whistle and colder air, I'd like to think. Plus you get to pick your filter, AEM oil-free and washable here!
The thing is that the factory set up wouldn't be as shabby as it is if not for all the convoluted long ass tubing, resonator and a restrictive paper/cloth filter and Acura calls it free flowing cold air intake???

no worries for things alling off. they are in pretty sturdy. also comptech's snorkel fits in the same way (just plugs it in to stock piping). i know this because i had comptech icebox setup on my previous ride (tsx) for two years and never had a problem.
about air filters... i never seen oem air filter as thick as TL's.. wonder how restrictive they are. k&n filter is half the thickness of the oem filter

I emailed comptech about their plans for an icebox for the 2007 TLS and this was their response:
We do have plans to produce a complete line of parts for the TL-S in the near future. Please keep checking our website for updates and details. Thanks for considering Comptech.

They've given that same exact response for many years now.
This is actually the same mod that I'm going to be doing. Big question is how does it sound on acceleration? Is it loud like the CAI or silent like Comptech's Icebox?
Also, how are the vibrations during idle with your mod since I'm assuming you removed the air resonator and replaced that with the inlet pipe? I heard without the resonator your steering wheel vibrates noticeably more during idle.

icebox is never loud like cai. that's another thing i like about it. but it does have slight intake resonance rumble during wot. one thing i noticed about 6cylinder engine is that cai is really quiet compared to 4cylinder engines. and steering wheel vibration is something i never heard about

I have a couple questions.
1. where did you get the long black pipe from?
2. did you bend it yourself?
3. Wouldn't that kink in the pipe where the bend is interfere with airflow?
#3 has bothered me ever since I saw the install. Same reason why we mandrel bend pipes for our exhaust or the CAI is kink free and a smooth bend. I was thinking of getting a type of plastic pipe and use a heat gun to slowly bend it to shape.

look at the pics again. that's oem intake piping that i seperated from the resonator

taking infact my TL-S is only a month old, I haven't started the mod yet so I did'nt know what it looked like, but that still begs the question that wouldn't hte kink interfere with smooth airflow?

probably it may interfere with the airflow but its not a sharp kink that'll block out the air. also the shape of upper section of the pipe isn't ordinarly like others (oval shaped) and smoother round pipe cant be used for extention from the intake box.

I think the main gains are from the cold air, not less restriction. I did the same thing to mine. How much airflow do you think is required for <300hp? I'm sure the factory 3" piping is more than fine. The snorkel is a good idea. People are making 500+ hp with factory 3" MAF meters in place... I don't think one small kink is going to make a difference when the tube is already bigger than it needs to be.
