Comptech Short Shift Kit - Reviews???
Can anyone who has the Comptech short shift kit provide feedback? I have recently purchased a shift knob/boot and am contemplating the SS installation as well. Due to the work involved I only want to take the center console apart once, and would appreciate any feedback regarding the performance of this kit.
Does it ruin the stock shifting 'feel'?
Do you ever have any trouble getting the car into gear?
Are the throws significantly reduced?
Have you noticed any improvement in your shifting/performance with the kit installed?
Thanks in advance!

The Short Shifter is a huge difference over the stock one. Much tighter and a bit notch-like feeling, but the throw is almost half the distance less and shifts are much improved/ faster. I just had it installed (only drove about 25 miles since install) and have not had a problem shifting into any gear yet. Feels alot like the six speed "Hurst Competition Plus" shifter that I had, when I had my '96 Trans Am. Paid $250 for parts and labor, acura dealer installed it.

Also the notchiness you describe was it caused by the SS kit?
Thanx!

which dealer in NJ installed it for you??
i know it is a lot of work based on the instructions from comptech's site....but i think $200 for a SSK install is a little too high.

Bill Vince's Bridgewater Acura did the install (2 hours labor). $50 + shipping for the kit, the rest for the labor. Total cost $250. The instructions looked like more than I wanted to deal with. Also, could end up costing more to fix broken trim pieces, OOPS!

my acura dealer in calabasas quoted me 6 hours... here labor is 80 bucks an hour, so 480 bucks to install a small piece of metal... I have the peice but i havnt had it installed yet because i cant see myself paying 480 bucks to have something thats 50 bucks installed.
The instructions are long and complicated. 2 hours is cheap from my experience talking to the dealers out in cali

Spoke with Marty Sussman Acura in Maple Shade NJ today. They said that it would be $228 + tax for the kit installed. They need 1 week to get the part and two hours of install time. I think I will take the plunge at the end of Feb. I am leaving the country in a week for a couple of weeks so I will wait until I get back.

When I had mine installed it took the dealership 2.5-3 hours. The throws feel much shorter. However, it took me a couple of days to get used to the extra effort. After the first couple of days, it felt like the effort was second nature.
Not to say, that it was too much, but it was noticeable. Now the shift is even more "wrist-flickable".

Considering this mod as well....had a SS in my S4 and it was very nice (yes, slightly more notchy, but a super SS kit). I also have the shaft cut down at the same time, which made for a great combo.
What aftermarket shift knobs are you fellas using/considering as well (I would think this too, but shorten the shift 'throw' a bit with the length of the TL knob). Anyone know the thread pitch off the top of their heads?
Thanks,
Travis

One on the right for me
I dont think the cost of the part, nor the size should directly relate to how much install is. Think about this...new drive shaft seals cost about 9 dollars each (no car is specific) but the install usually runs upwards of an hour. The short shifter is a small metal piece, but its a pain in the ass to take everything apart.

I did one SS on my RSXS in under an hour......its not hard guys. Just be careful with the trim pieces and use a thin cloth between the screwdriver blade and the plastic to prevent galling the trim when you pop it off. Collect the shavings from the drilling too.

had mine done for $138 by honda dealership. these guys had no idea what they were gettin themselves into. hahah. they told me that they do it on the civics, s2k's, integras, rsx, etc. all the time so it wouldnt be too much of a problem. they were wrong. they quoted me 2 hours at 60 and hour, but it took them 5 hours to do it. the head tech said it was most complicated he ever did, but everything came out fine. i would have raised hell if they charge me 5 hours labor. shift feels good and crisp. takes a little effort but all good. go to honda and see what they quote you

Just had mine put in yesterday at Marty Sussman of Maple Shade. The cost was $300.00 due to "price increases in the labor rate". Anyway bottom line is I would not tackle that install myself. I am not as gifted mechanically as some of you guys seem to be. I will say that I love the tighter pattern!! It does take a few minutes to get adjusted to the short throws but after that it is great.

having the AC vents for the rear passengers run these conduits from the front makes me think that there are lots more parts to remove and re-install when doing this ( w/out looking at any manuals)...My RSX-S was a breeze to do....but I'm not sure I want to do this myself, if I decide to do it at all..
