Cleaned my AEM filter
Cleaned my AEM filter
So yesterday I go to Advance Auto Parts to see if they sell the AEM filter cleaning kit because on AEM's website it lists them as a distributor of AEM. I went there and the did not have it, so I called AEM to try an order it but the guy I talked to said go an buy a bottle of simple green, spray it on there an let it sit for fifteen minutes then spray the filter with the hose from the inside out. So I went to try an find simple green but no one had it. So I bought a bottle of Woolite because I have heard of people using that to clean the filter. I put it back on an now it is as good as new.
I usually purchase a new one. But if I was to wash it, I agree with the Woolite idea. I would try Tide (or equivalent laundry detergent). Tide is designed to loosen and remove dirt from fibers (fabric).
WARNING - do not allow any dirty water to enter the mouth (opening) of the filter. You do not want to introduce dirt particles (from the dirty water) to the inside portion of the filter.

I mention this in a previous thread a month ago, because I had the same problem finding the AEM kit locally. Woolite just seemed like the logical sollution, because of the intake's material. I did clean it in the same matter as described on the AEM site though. The drying time was longer, but it worked.

i'm about clean my filter this weekend. i work about 4 miles from the aem shop but they don't have direct sales there so i couldn't drive there and buy some cleaning fluid. then nobody had it in stock locally so i ended up ordering it.
when you clean the filter the instructions call for 2 bottles of cleaning fluid. so...if you order it from the aem website 1 order for the fluid is actually 2 bottles.

I'm planning to clean it this weekend too. My filter should be extremely dirty.. had them for 3 years already.
So.. let me make sure..
tilt the left front wheel; just take out the filter through the wheel wall; spray it with some SimpleGreen; let it sit for 15 mins; rinse it from the inside out; and put it back on?

Yeah I made sure I shook off the excess water, then wiped it off with a clean rag and put it back on

I just knocked mine up against the ground a few times and just the air compressor to blow out any persistant particles. It was good enough for me. I've heard that using simplegreen is the same before from shops.....I might do that next time i'm in there.
quick dry trick
I have a shop vac that also blows air on the back side of the unit. I duck taped the hose around the filter opening and fired it up. Blows excess water out immediately and was almost dry to the touch in minutes. Just be sure to fire up the vacuum before attaching to filter and make sure no dirt or particles are exiting the hose.

Mine is due for a cleaning as well. I will have to try the Simple Green method.
Inaccurate, are you talking about the AEM filter? If so, how much do you pay for a new one?

A SiQ TL,
I replace my air filter for my CAI once per year. I do not clean the filter within the year - - just puchase a new air filter every year. I purchased my air filter (AEM DryFlow) from Summit Racing. The price is $43.95 at Summit.
Here is a link taking you to Summit and showing you the correct filter for the AEM CAI. (click here)
