"Chips" for performance gains

So i've been talking with friends about how to boost HP for "cheap" (CAI, exhaust- not cheap but cheaper than supercharger) and one of them keeps saying i sould get a "chip". So i looked to see how much they cost and found This one one ebay. How is it possible that they can claim HP increases this great, and sell for lless than $20? And how do these chips really work?

There's a reason why we pay so much for the other mods coz it works (even if it's just a few ponies).

45+ HP / 45+ TQ gains for $6.50; I find that hilarious.

Well, 1st the seller sucks ~$10 out of you, then the chip sits in your car. If you're lucky nothing bad happens.

Consider:

"Manufactured for a 1995 through 2008 Acura TL":

As if they're all the same? Not EVEN close to the same engines, compressions, Fuel Maps, VTEC, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

" 45+ Horsepower (50-55+ HP on trucks and SUV's)":

When did Acura start making trucks?

"Extends the time between costly engine Tune-ups":

It's 2007, "tune ups" are a thing of the past. Most cars won't reach the need for a "tune up" for 5 years (100k miles) or more.

"If you have ever seen a person accelerating quickly you may have seen black smoke coming from the back of the car, this is NORMAL. The black smoke is un-burnt fuel coming out in a liquid/gas form." :

If it's Unburnt, they why is it Black. It wasn't Black when I put it in. Hmmm, maybe it's NOT "Fuel in a liquid/gas form".

Save up and buy some real parts.

Ok, just wondering. Other say "10Hp gain". Are there any "chips" that actually do anything? Or would that just be a reflash (Hondata)?

There aren't any tunning based alterations which lead to performance that are under $500

I'm pretty sure that the whole concept of the chip is to put a resistance inline from the Air inlet temperature sensor to let the computer think that its 60 degree's outside, or whatever the optimal temperature is. I would think that this mod might cause the engine to detonate or not run correctly. If you have 90 degree air coming into the engine, but it thinks that it’s 60 degree air, something won’t run correctly. Certainly, more fuel might be pumped into the motor, thus, maybe more horsepower, but what’s the trade off? A fowl running engine, detonation, wasted fuel, poor average performance, and splicing your wiring harness? No thanks.

learn how to drive first, then worry about making the car faster.
