Cams

Is anyone aware of aftermarket cams for the 3.5L VTEC Type-S engine? I understand the principles behind VTEC but I can't help but wonder if they tone the cams down at the factory to make for a quieter exhaust note and an engine with slightly less vibration. I'm wondering if there is anything available that can push the engine to it's limits insofar as low-end torque (shorter cams) but is "designed" to stay within the specs that the VTEC tolerances allow. It would also be nice to have a little rumble from the exhaust too.

bisimoto regrinds cams.

you would have to talk to them about how aggressive you want it to be.

but its pointless, because it wont be streetable.
you would need the J&R's ECU.

bisimoto makes some regrinds for the J series but that's really about it being you're a TL-S. But they're reginds and at $700+ plus for a set pretty hard to justify the power you would maybe gain from them. I say maybe because they would really need some sort of ECU tuning capability to optimize them.

And if they "tone" the cams down at all (which they really don't) it's definitely not for the reasons you mention.

I should have mentioned that in my original thread; I had already assumed I would need a stand-alone ECU. More than anything I was looking for whether or not they "toned" them down at the factory and, if so, they could be reground to be more aggressive. Since this isn't happening I rest my case. Looks like cams are a moot point for power especially considering the cost/benefit ration is basically 0.

Essentially, I want to see how far this engine can go within reason. And by reason I mean price/performance ratio. I thought the cams would be the next place to look beyond modest engine bolt-ons, exhausts and such.

It does bother me I can't find a chip for the TL worth writing home about. How long has this car been around? 7...8 years? Engine-wise, more. Seriously, why hasn't anyone come up with a PnP chip yet? It just seems crazy as there has to be a hell of a market for one. I'd buy one yesterday if there was a good one.

But thanks for the info on the cams though, seriously. I haven't been on the boards for long but it seems you are the track-type so I really was mostly feeling around for what this engine could do but it seems that this is not a real option with cams.

And the search for more HP continues.......

Oh yeah, and my wife WON'T let me drop 10k+ on a turbo setup!

there cant be a chip.
the stock ECU re-writes or flashes so that its always in control.
the only solution is pass427's ECU.

Thats Rodney himself, sir.

here is more of what his ECU can do:
NEW ECU(CLICK HERE)

fully bolted on TL will gain about 15-20hp with this ecu.

Ahh man...this sounds too good to be true! I'm gonna sign off for the night here but I'm def going to check out this link. I'll sleep like I took four Ambien I'll be so happy if this is true.

Can't sleep too hard though, gotta shell out $300 to Sunnyside Acura in the morning to turn rotors...that's next on my list. The best damn rotors you can get. I don't care if they are ceramic or made out of depleted uranium like a SABO missile round I'm sick of warped rotors!

Thanks to all for your help. This has been a very useful thread to me and hopefully to others too. Later,

Oh BTW.. For cams, upgraded springs/retainers, and ECU not including labor you shelling out almost 2800.... But you'll be able to redline to 9.8K LOL

300 bucks to turn rotors? Did they buy you dinner first?

You can buy performance rotors for that price. I recommend ebc ultimaxx rotors. Had them for years and they didn't warp with multiple track days

I'm not sure what that first video is supposed to do???

The second idle video is fine for showing the lope but what kind of power does it make and what does it run? It needs a different exhaust or something, that's the worst sounding large cam engine I've ever heard.

I'll contribute something useful tomorrow when I haven't been up for 30hrs.

Yeah, tell me about it. Because I have the "Brembo" rotors they then went on to upsell me new rotors cause' the old ones couldn't be turned. AFTER I drove an hour and a half to get there. They wanted $500 uninstalled! I just kind of looked at the guy and he looked at me and I finally said "I think I can handle a pair of rotors. I'm all set."

There are a couple of good things I got out of this though. One, the rear passenger caliper was seized and that was under warranty. Even better, they didn't have one in stock. Now I get to pimp around in a $54k 2011 MDX loaner until Tuesday. AND I get to save my money for REAL rotors!

I didn't realize how nice the MDX was. It's a sweet ride with the Advance and Technology package.

I too was looking at the Powerslot rotors. I'm not too sure what else is out there to be honest other than, what, EBX is it?

I'm going to be checking out the Bisimoto J-series parts real soon...

I think he is pushing ~350+ whp on a NA engine....dont quote me on this....I spoke to him a while back and thats what he was looking at....I wont be surprise if he is pushing more....

yup this has put a huge hole in what all can be done on the TL....it puts the TL on a true tuner podium...

A lot of people say differently of the Hawk HPS....but I love them....those pads are just awesome....they stop on a dime....not noisy at all....they dust a lot but I like that since it means the pad is doing what its supposed to do....if they dont dust means they are eating up your rotors....I have had my powerslot slotted rotors for 80K miles....rear pads for 80K miles....front pads replaced after 40K (they had a ton of life left) and the new front pads are going strong after 40K miles....

Lets not turn this into a brake setup thread and stay on the topic of cams....

C'mon guys, a fully bolted 6MT base with cams, porting and J&R ecu might break 300 whp on a Dynojet. I need to see some dyno runs to believe an automatic is making 350+

I agree with swoosh...I don't wanna sound gay either but I really like the sound of the lope of those cams at idle. I can't wait to get my hands on a set of these. I'm just not sure yet what all of this is going to require...stronger springs, retainers, the J&R ecu...to me it's worth it. I wish I had a laundry list though. I can't expect someone to write it ALL out for me though, that would take all of the fun out of it. Ok, if someone gets bored a list would be kinda cool... Hope I don't sound toooooo lazy......

And swoosh, you're right, let's keep on topic about cams and not rotors. But just for the record I just bought the Powerslots.
