CAI Performance Evaluation
CAI Performance Evaluation
Is CAI worth it? I liked the sound of the CAI on my 2G, and while considering a comparable install on my 3G, I researched the specs and dyno results for the Injen setup (see http://www.injen.com/galleries/products/RD1482.pdf). The performance gains are marginal if not negligible: maximum torque & HP gains of 2% and 6%, respectively. There's actually a loss in torque below about 3500 RPM as compared to bone stock.
According to the data posted on K&N's website (http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/69-0021_dyno.pdf), the K&N Typhoon CAI doesn't fare any better with a 3% HP gain @ 5500 RPM (no torque data available).** Presumably, these tests were performed with stock exhaust systems. From personal experience on a dyno, I'd anticipate the % gain to increase to about 11% in combination with an aftermarket cat-back system.
So, the salient question is: Is CAI worth it for the way that you drive your TL, or is a drop-in improved flow filter such as the K&N a better and more cost effective choice? If you drive your TL hard in the upper 50% of the rev range, then a CAI is worth a look. If you are more apt to make use of the TL's low end torque to get up to speed (3000 RPM = 87+ MPH in top gear), then you may want to spend your $ on other improvements to your ride.
Opinions?
**Note that the maximum torque and HP achieved by Injen & K&N dyno tests vary by 10+ HP, even for the stock base line pulls. This is attributed to variations between the tested vehicles and testing apparatus.

I have read many many threads that debate the effectiveness of a cold air intake. I purchased a Fujita F5 since it was the cheapest I could find. I figure they all do the same so why not get a good price. I have to admit the performance gains are rather mild but It does add more than just hp gain. Removing the old intake system really cleans up the engine bay and decrease weight. I also like the sound. I can always switch back to stock too. May look into a custom air box set up for the rainy season.
