CAI and Fuel mileage
CAI and Fuel mileage
Hey everyone,
I was curious to find out what people are getting for mileage per tank. I bought a K&N Cold air intake kit for my '04 Acura TL and i seem to be getting worst gas mileage
. Your input would be great.
Thanks!
Steve

Mine has gone up a consistent 1mpg since I got the CAI. I am now able to cruise in 6th gear at around 40mph instead of 50 and I think that's what helped the most. I'm getting 25 mpg with city driving, heavy throttle most of the time to get to speed.
i dunno if it's just me..maybe i just go WOT too much...could explain why i change tires every 5-6 months and had to get completely new rotors after 17k miles...but i was getting 10-11 MPG, and now i get 12-13 MPG.
i have the Fujita CAI

iono, it's probably largely due to the face that I'm in love with my intake sound and every long strip of road i see I get the urge to just punch it....the drone from the CAI and the Stage 3 gets me going...like right now, i'm working on no sleep at all (all nighter on a 12 page paper...hehe college days eh?) I dropped off my gf this morning and as sleepy as i was, as soon as i went WOT i felt so damn good, adrenaline and everything...i came back to my apartment, and i'm about to collapse lol..
but yea i realize having the MPG of a Hummer is retared, i'm thinking once i do the magnaflow setup, it'll be so much louder that i wont be always hitting WOT and i'll probably tone down a bit.
LOL if THAT doesn't work ....what if i've had a lemon for the past 4 years

i dunno...how many miles are on your '07?
ha
my TL-S gets about 200 per tank on city driving.... but, thats when the light comes on, and as we all know, the light means you still have like 3.5 gallons of gas left
so 13.5 gallons / 200 miles = 15mpg
i do alot of city driving too, so its a pretty accurate experiment
my 06 TL usually got about 240.. or 18mpg

ive noticed that one it gets down to 1/4 of a tank the needle drops faster. this time around i got like 260-270 miles per tank. so if thats what everyone else is getting then i guess i dont feel so bad...What size tank is it?

my 06 TL, had AEM CAI, UR pulley, TB/IM spacers, Eshift pro-cats, comptech exhaust
when driving calmly, i ALWAYS got >31mph on the parkway... one night, i made a 300 mile round trip to mohegan sun on a full tank of gas, and the light didnt even turn on. i got a solid, 33mpg on I-95 in connecticut doing 80mph. i was impressed
the same exact trip in my 08 TL-S, i got a solid 26mpg... so there is a noticeable difference in fuel consumption.. however, my judgements are based solely on the MID information

In city driving I consistently get 13-14MPG. Haven't taken long highway trips yet. I recently changed oil and air filters, and have no performance mods on the car yet (just got it a month ago, post-lease 05 A/T). I think I take it easy on the gas pedal, but I do drive in Brooklyn which might explain things a bit, but 13MPG still... Is this normal? Is there anything my mechanic could check/change to improve my mileage?
Would appreciate any input on this matter.
Guys don't forget for us northerners....Gasoline doesn't vaporize readily at very cold temperatures. So oil companies formulate fuel differently for cold-weather markets in the winter. Unfortunately, the changes that provide better cold vaporization characteristics also result in less available energy for combustion. You won't get as far on a gallon of winter gas as you will on a gallon of summer gas.
I did the K&N drop in air filter to my 08 TL Type S..........I think it helped in throttle response and about 1 MPG city and maybe, maybe 2 MPG highway. My car is still pretty new, but my Trip Computer shows 30 - 31 MPG highway cruising at 70mph. Before it was 28- 29 MPG.
**City driving is a whole different thing........the Type S is a HEAVY car with a BIG motor. I get about 16 - 17 MPG usually in CITY driving (NO LEAD FOOT).

I have Fujita CAI installed and ever since then I get anywhere btwn 11-13mpg reads on the MID while driving locally. Highway is around mind 20's to 30's.
is it because it's taking in more air hence dumping more fuel to make it go?

Good to know others are getting improved economy with CAI.
I will get 31-32 mpg, and even up to 33 mpg on straight, open highways @ 65-70 mph. Stop'n go & city traffic dings it to the low 20's.
I'm driving an '06 AT w. AEM CAI, OUTLAW ENG. spacers, & GREDDY EVO2. Also, I use 91 octane, as the best available here in So Cal (Riverside).

My mid was showing 18mpg before CAI
After install of Fujita CAI is now showing 22/21 mpg.
I do alot of NYC driving!! as we all know is not the best in the world. ( LIE, CROSS island, Cross BX xpwy)

um shouldnt be, I just installed a Fujita CAI and get the same gas mileage i did before, are you possibly driving the car harder then before?

Also, we need to let our cars idle in order to warm up the engine and cabin..
This burns gas while moving nowhere..
If the intake is sucking in colder air (and/or more air), and the engine is producing more power as a result, then for a given air-fuel ratio it will use more gas and therefore gas mileage should go down. That is the most fundamental notion of a gasoline engine. There is no such thing as "free" horsepower.
Also, the ECU, airflow sensor, and oxygen sensors work together to adjust the fuel mixture for operating performance and emissions. When you change the airflow, the computer is compensating. The ECU may also retard the timing to compensate for unusual airflow parameters that may affect emissions, which may increase or decrease gas mileage slightly.
Finally, if the CAI is not wrapped and transferring ambient air to the intake air then you will likely get better mileage because the mixture leans out to compensate. In that case, you would get better gas mileage and less horsepower. Mine is wrapped and maybe that is why there is no perceptible difference in gas mileage.
To increase gas mileage, you would need to increase engine efficiency (less friction or internal rotating mass), lower drag or weight of the car, increase driveline efficiency, or reduce rolling resistance from tires. You could also reprogram your ECU to lean out the mixture, which if it is not optimally set based on your mods, may increase power while lowering gas mileage.
I have had my CAI for about 1,000 miles and if anything my mileage has dropped very slightly (and no I do not drive it harder to hear the noise). I get about 30 MPG highway averaging 75 MPH and 19 MPG city. Before the CAI it was closer to 20 MPG city and the highway has remained the same.
