Brake pad selection

Hi all, few questions i'm confused on. first one is what the heck does my car have in terms of brakes?? i see some have brembo and some dont? how can i tell what i have? its AT 2007 TLS with red calipers.

I'm looking for street performance and low dust. I dont really mind squeaking. i just want something that will stop and the lower the dust the better.

EBC red stuff /Duralast Gold Cmax /Hawk HPS these seem to be ones mentioned in the forum mos,t are all good choices for good street peformance low dust? I am keeping stock rotors.

and just wondering what benefits does a slotted rotor provide? just cooling? and if i were to upg rotors is it better to just do it when i change pads or can i do it later on?

Type S's and 04-06 6MT TLs have Brembo calipers.

CMAXes have low dust, but if you're looking for performance I prob wouldnt pick them. They have less initial bite than the OEM brembo pads.

These are how the brembo calipers look like:

thanks for clearing up brembo issue.

would EBC red stuff be an upgrade in performance and main low dust still?

I tried the Cmax's last year and was pretty disappointed with them. I ditched them for the EBC Yellowstuff and would never go back. The yellowstuff is probably a little more pad than you're looking for and they kinda dust but they stop nicely.

It's not so much the cooling but the slots help "cut" a nice fresh edge into the pad so it always has nice contact with rotor and additionally gives the brake dust and gases a place to go instead of building up between pad and rotor. Some cooling? probably, but not like a drilled rotor would. At least that's how I look at it.
Hope it helps...

Vill, what are your thoughts on the RedStuff? They claim to produce virtually no dust and good stopping ability

Honestly dude, get over the dust factor.... It should be the last thing on your mind when buying pads for a performance brake setup. I would also say that the less a pad dusts, the less it performs. I know lots of people use the Redstuff so I'm assuming they aren't terrible. Just try them. There is no end all, perfect option out there; so buy them, test them, and decide if they are worth keeping or not.

im using the redstuff pads right now. LOTS of dust. the same or more than oem. but performance is good... im switching to duralast cmax gold in a few days. ive read good reviews on this forum, and many other forums that the duralast have decent performance and much less dust

Some of us might not like dirty ass wheels two days after washing our cars, so get over yourself!

+1
OEM for me. A bit of wax on your wheels and the dust comes right off when wiped.

I use the EBC reds on both my '08 350Z and my wife's '07 TL-S. Very nice performance upgrade, and very low dust after initial bedding. The EBC pads come with an abrasive bed-in coating which serves to clean the rotors of previous pad residue and resurface them to some extent. During that first few hundred miles, there's lots of dust.

I believe the last set of pads that I had on my car were the ROTORA H2 ceramic brake pads. They had very low dust and I felt very safe and comfortable with the braking. I recently switched StopTech rotors and performance pads. The do dust more then the ceramic pads but the stopping ability is great.

I am trying to decide between going with something aftermarket or rolling OEM. I really like the factory feel/performance of my OEM pads.

I know there has been a lot of debate on good replacements...any thought?

I am at about the same situation. I have a 2007 TL type S automatic trans. I've been changing my front brakes often and its getting expensive. Each time its more and more and more. I was wondering what are the current pads on my car? The dealers do say I have brembo and thats Y i don't get alot of life outa my pads. I was wondering what sorta pads should I buy. I don't mind dust. I like good stopping and longer life. Also I read alot about changing my own pads seems simple but I was concerned about the rotors and the film from bedding do I need to re-surface the rotors to change pads? or do they sells a rotor cleaner that I can use? Help thanks

I am not a big fan of dusty wheels, but you can't really even see the dust on the stock TLS wheels.

Hi guys,
Not too long ago I wrote a paper on selecting brake pads that some of you may find helpful: http://www.essexparts.com/learning-c...ose-brake-pads

My paper doesn't focus on one specific brand of pad. It's more about looking at all of the options and finding something that works properly for you, based on your specific needs. Hopefully some of you find it useful.

The STOPTECH Performance pads are a bit more aggressive than the ROTORA H2's and it's well worth it: more bite, better braking, slightly more dust, low noise.

I've been using Hawk HP+ on the fronts and they perform great cold and even better hot. I could drive them on the street and the track (with ATE or Motul brake fluid of course, which I also have and highly recommend, even for street use). The only disadvantages are lots of dusting and they are tough on the rotors...
