Question Best TL Performance is...?

Lets say hypothetically the TL had to race <insert car here> (doesn't matter which car because I know some cars perform better from 0-100km and some are better from a rolling start), I just want to know for the TL, will it give a better performance (acceleration,etc..) if it had a rolling start from 60km/hr? 100km/hr? or how about from rest?

I think I read somewhere that the TL has more high end torque as opposed to other cars who have low end torque, how does this factor into the performance? And does the V-Tech range start from approximately 5k RPM and would this mean that maybe it would be advatagous regardless of whether I start from rest or rolling start to rev the engine up to that range before letting the car go?

Sorry for all the questions...I guess they can basically be summed up with "What is the best way to win a short race against another car?"

P.S. I don't condone racing, I am just curious and would like to know the ability of my car and the way to get the best performance out of it. Thanks!

Generally the car that makes the most power (if weight for each vehicle is appx. the same) will win from a roll. From a roll you would want to downshift to get your car in the powerband of your engine. Both cars can do this so a fatter HP/TQ curve, not necessarily peak will help you here.

From a dead stop the car who can put the most power to the pavement will win. Just ask anyone with gobs of torque how important launching at the correct engine speed, improving traction, and getting the proper gear is. Once you're out of the hole, the car making the most power will start pulling on the other guy. There are a lot of variables.

Thanks, but how about for the TL specifically? What kind of a hp/torque curve does a TL have?

Climbs up and up... Peaky like you would expect from a 3.2 liter engine.

Racing from roll would be better than from a dead stop only because of the tire spin.

the TL is slow off the starting line, because it lacks low end torque, but the TL is also very fast in higher RPM, if you u want low end torque you could modify your car and add the Comptech Exhaust, and an AEM Intake. this won't improve DRASTICALLY but it will give you a better feel with acceleration

That's part of it, but our TLs are also comparitively slow off the line vs. comparible horsepower cars because of the FWD.

The easiest way to explain this is like this: Do you know how when you hit the gas hard, the car's nose seems to come up a bit and all your weight gets tossed to the back (and you feel pressed against the back of the seat?)

Well, that's GOOD for RWD cars because their power comes from the rear end of the car which currently has more downforce and limits spinning of the wheels - meaning better traction & better accelleration. In our TLs, when the car takes off hard, there is less downforce on the front wheels creating more spin/less traction and a loss of some accelleration.

Hope that makes sense. You are better off with a rolling start...

Remember to only race on a closed track.

Oh okay, thanks.
Also, is it safe to rev the engine from a standstill to like a higher rpm before launching the car, if so, how do we approach it? What are the consequences of this, in terms of damage to the car.

If your manual, then just FRY up your clutch and rev the rpm's to as high as they can go, and move the car with the clutch. P.S.- Dont do this often. I don't recommend being too hard on the stock clutch. I'm in the process of fixing mine now! Benefit: good solid launches. Consequence: FRIED CLUTCH

actually.. an exhaust and intake wont do anything for low end torque.. many times it makes it worse... intake exhaust help at the top end.. check any dyno chart..

Sorry, I have to respectfully disagree. I have an AEM CAI and a custom exhaust with Comptech Mufflers and I actually noticed an improvement in both low-end (and high-end) torque. Also, check out last month's Honda Tunning Magazine (http://hondatuningmagazine.com/tech/0505ht_tl/) where they featured a TL w/ an Injen CAI and a Comptech Exhaust and the car gained torque (and horsepower) accross the board. Nice dyno sheet, that's a great gain.

The only thing is, if you go to injens site the intake for TL shows loss in TQ in low end but good gains up high if you just do intake alone...

The funny part is I then look at AEM, and both car's base lines are SOO far off its not even funny... and AEM shows no loss but thats some fake looking dyno... I want to see a real dyno sheet of before and after with aem...

I would not try to launch our cars too high you will spin your ass off. If you slip the clutch out at high rpms you will eventually glaze the clutch disc, and the clutch will slip.

On the street I tach it up to 1500 and roll out fast, if I am racing somebody else.

The basline dyno looks accurate because it practically matches mine...both were dyno'd on a dynapack. The increase in power from the cai however obviously needs to be confirmed.

Since I have a 5AT, I do not have a clutch, is there another way to rev it up for a 5AT?

You can brake torque the engine, give it gas while also holding down the brake. I would not go over like 1200-1500.

I"m assuming you're asking me. I had it custom built by a shop in so. cal. It's all stainless steel w/ mandrel bent fittings. The resonator is Magnaflow and the mufflers are Comptech.

put it in neutral. rev it up to the redline and put it in drive. LOL u will spin ur ass off but its still fun (but bad). Or the ebrake trick will work. Autos are not meant to be raced
Get a manual, its more fun

$45 each for the Mufflers
$30 each for the 4" tips
$90 for the Magnaflow Resonator
$400 for the SS exhaust and installation for all
Total = $565

Nice article, those are some convincing gains! I had my Integra dyno'ed at MD automotive, used to be "Jackson Racing". Mark Dibella at MD Automotive installed my supercharger on my Integra long ago.

I tried to email it to you, but at 14.4MB it was too much for your email system.

Anyone else want to host?
