AWD conversion?
AWD conversion?
like the title says, has anyone done it or heard of it being possible? I've been looking everywhere, but found nothing on it.
I dont think its a too far fetched idea:
drive shaft
transfer case
axles
hubs
control arms

it would be tough since you would have to fit the rear differential in, but the issue is there a seat in the way (the back seat). Also you would have to do a lot of custom fabbing to get it to work. Also remember that you car will be a bit slower since now power is going from 2 wheels to 4.

RL one won't def. work since the electromagnetic differential won't fit. There isn't any room for it. This has been discussed before and the consensus was that its not worth it since you would end up not having a TL at the end of the process, but a slower version of the RL.

and as for the loss of power, i doubt you will lose much power, especially off the line. I currently own an 07 wrx and I'm considering an 08 tl-s 6sp for my next car

why don't we wait 2010 TSX V6 with SH-AWD.
If Acura really launch that model, we might able to study the setting and configuration underneath and maybe apply same concept to TL-S.
But, again I doubt regular TL to have enough power for SH-AWD.
After all, TL-S share same engine as previous RL.
While new RL share same engine to new TL SH-AWD and both are AWD.
So, by considering these facts, I guess there might be possibility for a conversion, how much, that'll be another questions.

^ but interesting - I remember some odd years ago when I saw a RWD integra. I thought it was pretty cool - this was really like 6-7 years ago. A lot of fabrication but end product was cool.
I've seen a few, mostly done for around $5-6K on average. One was sold after 4 days on the used market.

No matter what you do, I don't see you coming out of it with anything like SH-AWD. Just plain old 4WD.
The electronics and sensors and all the rest that go into power distribution and whatnot would be a NIGHTMARE on top of the mechanical nightmare.

Who wouldnt want a TL as a drifter? Only problem is trying to squeeze enough power and torque to get the rear end kicking.
This is true..
And yes a RWD TL would be awesome!!
If we have the money to make it rear wheel drive, we have the money to put a different engine in. I'd bet with a decent amount of fabrication (no less than it took to make it rear wheel drive, likely) you could have a 2JZ TL. Who else just got a boner?

I really think you can probably get the s2k platform on there for relatively cheaper than any other alternative.
Coming from the Subie world AWD has never left my mind and I've thought about the possibilities and inevitable nightmares of doing this conversion. I wouild love to see this happen and maybe someday this idea will come to fruition. The thought of having a 3G AWD TL
. Come on TL gurus makes this happen!!

As far as the RWD concept you should check out some 3000GT VR4 and Stealth threads. They have the transfer case to get the power from the front to the back. Since it is AWD. Then I think they remove a gear or something in the tranny and weld that part on the inside to prevent power from getting to the front wheels. That's info part #1.
#2 Alot of dragsters and race cars that have a dodge or ford motor run a chevy tranny. Best of both worlds in their eyes. They have an adapter plate that bolts to the engine block bolt pattern and then the tranny bolts to it's specific bolt pattern. Thus allowing any engine to run any tranny it wants.
Whether you want AWD or RWD you would need a complete AWD system (Tranny, Transfer Case, Custom driveshaft, rear diff.) to start with from some used car. If you want the AWD then just use and engine/tranny adapter plate and add the components. If you want the RWD then you would go a step further and start welding stuff inside the tranny to keep the power from getting to the front wheels. This is if you insist on still using the J32 transverse mounted engine. This is what I would do if I just wanted AWD. This would be the cheaper route if using the stock motor.
The easiest and cheapest way to get RWD would be a complete drivetrain swap. (engine, tranny, driveshaft, rear diff). All from same car so the components don't need custom fab to fit each other. Use custom motor mounts and put the motor in straight, not transverse, and run the tranny in line. This way you don't waste a perfectly good AWD tranny. Since the engine bay for the TL just fits the J32 tranverse I would imagine extensive firewall mods to fit a motor and tranny in straight. That's my

oh, i'm sorry
i'll let you guys get back to your atlp/xlr8 exhaust threads and your a-spec body kit threads. didn't mean to send this forum into chaos on any modifications besides basic bolt-ons.

the RL had shown losses of 35% through SH-AWD on dynos. As bearcat stated, there would be a huge electrical nightmare if SH-AWD was put in since it needs a lot of sensors and tie in data to configure the power distribution. But as far as fixed AWD, you could do it, but then you'd have no back seat.
I just want to thank AtlxPat for "somthing different" I too have thought about this a few times. Even thought (just for a sec.) about a thread like this. But then I knew it was to far from the norm. so I just moved on. But not you!
My hats of to ya! I think this is just at the right time. I would LOVE to have SHAWD on my TL. No more tq steer!! Yes!
