ATLP J-pipe V2 Deterioration!?
#161
Burning Brakes
I appreciate that the OP and the vendor have come to an amicable agreement on the repair. However, I would have to disagree about the comparison of the springs and J-Pipe being apples and oranges. Both failures in my opinion are safety related and I had much rather have a spring break than have carbon monoxide leak into a vehicle which could either impair a driver or worse. I believe this is one of the reasons the OEM pipe is built to last many years. MrHeeltoe mentioned that he was going to do a survey of all buyers of the ATLP j-pipe to see if there are any other problems similar to the OP. I think this is a very wise step to take to make sure there are no safety related issues with this product.
MrHeeltoe has provided some very insightful information on this thread and helped me to determine that the best option for me is to leave my exhaust stock.

Once you hear/feel a jpipe (any aftermarket one) you will not want to leave yours stock! Trust me, lol.
I like the idea of extended warranty...BUT, it kinda reminds me of that scene in Tommy Boy where Chris Farley goes off on the tooth fairy rant and then is really honest about stamping something guaranteed rather than just relying on the fact that it's a quality product. Remember it?
I think a small warning for people that drive in salt and then handling on a case by case basis where you both find a good solution would be adequate. Or possibly just upping the price slightly (would still be very competitive in relation to the competition's pricing anyway) to give you a buffer account to pay for repairs/replacements on those onesie twosie problems that MAY arise. Like you said, old design/batch of flex...probably older stock when the OP bought it so although it only lasted a year...if it had been new stock with the newer design, probably would have not even had this thread!

IM GLAD THIS ISSUE CAME TO A CIVILIZED AGREEMENT.
While I may be going out on a limb here... I feel that most people who chimed in & jumped the gun with slandering & insults, fail to realize that without ATLP, XLR8, RV6, HEELTOE we would have no specific aftermarket catered to our 3Gs. And yes with growth there are growing pains.
But would you be more satisfied with no aftermarket parts?
These guys (ATLP, XLR8, RV6, HEELTOE, J&R) have been here since the beginning of the 3G. When JDM manufacturers laughed at the idea of aftermarket performance products for a USDM specific ACURA, these innovators pioneered the 3G aftermarket area. They started as you and I, simple ACURA enthusiast, but took a risk & created something that all of us take for granted. Through days/months/years of trial & error, & with undeniable support from the A-ZINE community they gave birth to the "3G PERFORMANCE MOVEMENT."
So there it is... I would rather have these guys have my back in the 3G performance world, than a bunch of "SUITS" with engineering & business degrees. Cuz these guys have heart for our 3G! you cant earn that, you either got it or you don't!
Sometimes we all need to be reminded.
Here is a well deserved THANKS FOR THE HARD WORK ATLP, XLR8, RV6, HEELTOE, J&R

Those are extremely good points, I have to hand it to you. Without them, we'd be still with stock stuff..

LOL @Tommyboy reference.
But seriously, contextually, we aren't slapping "guaranteed" on a box that we can't support. Indeed we don't do that, and got kinda criticized for it here just now. Tommy boy's point was that anyone can slap a label on a box and charge less for the part. All you are getting is a guaranteed piece of crap. Instead do business with Callahan because you know us, you know our stuff isn't crap, and we got'cho back. No label needed. We expect the brand name and the reputation of our parts and service to give our parts the credibility needed for the benefit of doubt that the parts really are in fact good.
An extended warranty is offered for the peace of mind that doubtful people need. Rather than raise the cost like 5% on everyone to cover warranty costs that really won't usually come up, we only add it to the people who feel they need it.

I guess that makes sense...
but after all has been said and done, I don't think 1 thread like this (where you ended up making OP happy anyway) should muddy up YOUR name enough to need that.
ATLP has always stood for quality and it has always stood for fitment to OUR vehicle specifically.
Imagine
Jpipe, now fits:
2001-2008 Honda Odyssey (with seat heaters)
1992-2004 Chevy Silverado (crew cab)
1999-1999 1/2 Pontiac Aztec (All)
1989-2009 Acura TL
LOL...I think your problem is solved...you had a problem, and since it was within reasonable time, handled it without too much hassle. You identified WHY too...old stock, new design fixes that. I think you're good to go.

I think an extended warranty is a fantastic idea! So then if this was to ever re-arise they'd have a little more peace of mind.

Just checked mine yesterday as my car was getting an oil change. Looks great, no tears or nothing. I've only driven the car in Charlotte and I've had the V2 J-pipe for more than a year.

I got the part back. WOAH it is like, kinda ugly looking, but everything is really intact. The mesh on the flex is all gone, but the flex is still in there.
Very mysterious. This thing is covered in surface corrosion. I have never ever seen a j-pipe like this...
Anyway, will bring it to our fab shop to see what we can do with it.

1st of all...
It was such a priority for you to find resolutions you created this thread so don't be surprised when people are a little shocked that you complain, the guy says he will resolve, and you take a few months to get the part to him. On a side note, couldn't have known about your friends and I'm sorry for your loss. I still mourn the loss of a few close friends and it's been 15 years so I'm with you.
2ndly...
He didn't badmouth you, just gave an update on the shape of the pipe...and since this was your method of venting originally, I think it's a little unfair for you to turn around and complain that he updated us on the platform you originally chose to use.

2nd. I never said he bad mouthed me. He came here before even contacting me back that they even received it. I've been thinking all along that it got lost in transit.. It's fine. Just it urked me. I'm fine with him updating here. He can keep adding to this fantastic thread, but it would of been nice to at least send me a message saying you received it. I dont want to complain, I'm happy he's repairing it. That's all. Done. I'm completely grateful for this repair even if I kinda sent it A LOT later than I would of liked to..

Yeah. I dont know. HT's saying mine looks overly corroded, like the pipe itself. But the only thing I really want fixed is the flex section anyways, why's the rest of the pipe even matter. If yours looks that mint compared to mine, then I'm sure mine was a faulty flex section.

The way mine started to disintegrate was from the top of the flex facing towards the bottom of the car to then around the weld sections. Then it eventually fell entirely off after I hit a huge thing of water recently. It flushed under the car and it was gone, next time I looked.

Three Wheelin'
It is very common for that outer mesh to rust off flex pipes anywhere salt is used in the winter. I would agree with the amount of money J-Pipes cost i would expect them to stand up longer but its bound to happen someday if you use it in the winter. Mine still looks brand new but i never drive my car in the winter.
Sorry to hear about your losses OP!
