Imagine beer in a bottle. Its big at the bottom and then the neck is smaller and gets jammed up when you turn it upside down which doesnt allow as much out. Like a cup obviously would let out more liquid considering the top is more open. Your exhaust can be the same way if you get the J-pipe and the Race Pipe (2.5in tubing) and keep the stock exhaust (2.25in tubing) the gases will get jammed up as they funnel into the smaller tubing and will cause a clog which will in return cause a loss in torque.

I dont know how good of an explanation that is lol

if u get j-pipe and race pipe. I would hope you are going to finish the exhaust because you wont see the gains other wise. I did mine in stages.
two reasons, money and wanted to experience the change piece by piece

would leaving the cat installed instead of replacing it with the race pipe cut down on gains?

I'm just worried about failing emissions. I already ordered it all, but I'm just deciding on if I really should remove the cat and put in the Race Pipe. I'm not sure how emissions goes so I'm not sure the likely hood to fail if I remove the cat.

I think that if they just do the tail pipe test ill pass. but i think once they see the after market exhaust they will automatically do a visual which i could possibly fail even with the heat shield. and you said it wont make my engine light go off? which means what if they do an OBD?

Doing just a 3rd cat delete, you should pass easily unless they by some freak nature, know the TL has a 3rd cat.

And also, if the engine light doesn't go off they won't know its removed even if they decide to do an OBD?

People say with J pipe and Catback exhausts they don't really notice any more power or torque. I am wondering why people do this then?

Which people are these because there's plenty of others on here who can attest to the catback & j-pipe changing how the car runs, myself included.

cmon, now. of course it makes a difference. Sound, accellaration, torque, better gas mileage when not stepping on it. Your car breathes better.

you will be fine. you have 3 cats. your car wont miss the third one. ive done this no cel's no failing emmissions. they cant take the heatshield off to look. It will pass visual. Dont stress

thats too much trouble to go through for the gains you get wont pass inspection either, not to mention pollution and the gassy smell coming from your car

yea i wouldn't recommend pre-cat deletes. if you get pulled over the cop is gonna smell it and then you're toast. ATLP the whole way through

just got mine yesterday and installed...it's well worth it if you buy ATLP, but the noise is too loud for my taste whenever i step on it. I will add magnaflow resonator to tone the sound down a little bit.

Will give a few gains, but you'll need a catback to get better ones; it will bottleneck.

how bad would the bottleneck be if you dont mind me asking? like if i was to step on it would there be a delayed reaction compared to stock? If you are wondering why i dont just get catback it's because i dont like the sound and i am trying to have something that sounds as close to stock as possible but gives some gains. thanks

You might like the Comptech exhaust? I've heard it sounds pretty close to stock without being loud.

I finally installed my j-pipe, race pipe and cat back.. my friend and i did it ourselves and i finally understand why it doesnt cause a CEL. it was also fairly easy to install. the hardest part was getting the old one off. it was the biggesttt pain. but now that its all on it sounds great and im really noticing a difference.
