AEM CAI problem?
AEM CAI problem?
Hey all,
We finally had a good amount of rain over here in SF, and when I got home, I noticed that the filter got a little wet, no big deal. The thing that bothered me was that when I touched the filter element, it left a red dye on my hands. It seems that the red dye was leaking off where the water made contact with the filter. Anyone else have this happen? Is this a defect?

Water and oil don't mix. Odds are you have an oiled air filter on your CAI and it got wet. The water displaced some of the oil and your hand got oily/pink.
If the filter was 'dry' you could still touch it and it would still feel oily so odds are you're ok.

The red dye is the oil they apply from the factory to keep it well oiled
...I'm a year or so you will have to buy a kit that has a cleaner and "this oil" that after you clean the filter you will apply, hopefully you won't get in your hands...lol...you're OK

maybe is off the topic but this one work http://www.injen.com/7030 :thumbsup_hydro.html

There was quite a bit of water that got onto the filter, so I doubt that hydrofilter might help. I was thinking about putting those heat shields on the front of the filter, so atleast water splashing won't get to the filter from that side. As for the dye, I thought that the oil they use was clear? I've had an AEM intake before, but never had the dye come off. Wonder how this will affect it's filtering capability?
AEM's new Dryflow filter
Might try this new filter if you don't want to deal with oil or re-oiling your filter after cleaning it.

okay, heres the real answer.
you're fine. the only time you need to worry about filter and water is when your filter is actually IMMERSED in water. you need like at least 6 oz of water in your manifold for something bad to happen. rain vapor wont do that.
rain is no problem. the red stuff is the lubricating element on the filter. wanna hear the science. here we go:
back in the day, like 10+ years ago, air filters were made out of paper. they physically trapped dust and whatever from entering the intake. kinda like old school vaccum cleaners.
today's technology is different. it workd on the rules of attraction. dust and particles are positively charged, and the oil on the filter is negatively charged. so when dust and stuff comes near the filter, the dirt gets trapped in the filter.
im an old school riceboy, so i know my stuff when it comes to these kinda parts.

Thanks for all the help. I know that I'm in no real danger because of the water, just weird that the little amount of water that got onto the filter caused the dye to leak. I had an AEM on my 240, and when that thing was wet, it never had any dye come off, so this is just strange to me. I thought that the oil they used was clear
I may consider going with either an Apexi or this new dry filter from AEM when it comes time to clean this one.
