5AT shift faster

I've been looking around and can't seem to find anything. The 5AT transmission has paddles as we all know, but they aren't immediate shifts, there is a delay. Is there any way to get a quicker response in the shift? I mean less delay. Many other cars shift on the click of the paddles (I'm aware there are dual clutch transmission like in the GTR's). Can we tune our transmissions, tune the car, anything to make it more of an immediate shift? Thank you in advance.

You can try the Redline Type-F/D4 mixture.

Unfortunately, Honda's older 5 spd automatics are not very performance oriented. I think their new 6AT is a little more efficient.

I think you guys are missing the OP's point. He's not complaining about the actual shift time, he's complaining about the shift DELAY, which is the time from when you press the paddle shifter to when the shift begins. I have noticed the delay is slightly less when going WOT. Although even so it's still considered a bit laggy compared to some other cars.
The 2-3 shift during normal driving seems to be the laggiest.

Although after driving the car for awhile, you do get used to it. I have learned to anticipate the lag and press the throttle accordingly.

For example, when slowing down to and downshifting to 1st gear, always wait until the shift is complete before pressing the throttle otherwise it'll cause an uncomfortable jerk.

Thank you paperboy. I love driving 6 speed manual, but hour+ commutes each way to work everyday made me get the auto. I'm getting used to having a slower car and I guess the whole auto thing is messing with me from "banging gears."

If you get use to your transmission you will make the delay less noticeable On my some people think I have a 6 speed but I don't redline is at 7k rpm and I shift at 6500 by the time it get to 68,6900 rpm it go to the next gear.

The delay is in the system and computing. As another member said, the 5at in any of these are not very performance oriented. If you check out my notes on the TLX from training in TX you'll note that this was a focus point on the design team and they improved it by 30%. Different fluid should help, other than that... You are literally SOL. Deal with or 6mt swap.

2 step on a 5at...? Get a manual for that, everyone knows the 5at isn't performance. Plus how would that work? You can already torque hold it but you'll go through a tq converter, axles, and motor mounts like it's your job.

The only way to achieve any type of "2 step" on an automatic is by either putting in a higher stall converter, or a trans brake. Thats the only way autos can do that stuff. Or you buy an automatic supercar like an Aventador or something.

Probably take valve body modifications to get around whatever delay the computer is set up for. When I had my 5AT rebuilt, they did go through the valve body to get around the sloppy stock shift parameters. So far, so good, shifts are quicker, firmer and consistent from gear to gear, 2-3 upshift is vastly improved. Haven't manually shifted it yet though, figured I'd wait until I have more than 500 miles on it before doing so.

So they actually modified something with the stock valve body? Do you know what they did?

IHC, what would you do to a valve body to get it to shift faster?

Don't know exactly what they did, probably similar to what a shift kit does in a domestic transmission. I put a couple shift kits in, one in my Chevelle, the other in my Cutlass. It changes the way the ATF flows through the valve body, the kit changed the separator plate, gasket, drilled one hole larger (dual purpose kit) and removed 3 of the 4 check balls. I think it changed a couple springs too. Shifts were much faster and harder, half throttle 1-2 up shifts would chirp the tires.

What was done to mine isn't that extreme but the goal is to reduce overlap on shifts and increase line pressure. Shifts quick and firm, but not tire chirping bang shifts-not really something you want in a FWD car anyway, would end up eating up transmission mounts.

I guess I will learn to live with it. Time to go low and give up on making this car "fast"
