Is 3rd Cat Delete Illegal?

Is removing the 3rd cat considered illegal? Since we have the other 2 cats. I though the 3rd cat was to support why our cars are considered ULEV but exceed the minimum emmissions requirements.

Or is it, if the cat is on the car (no matter how many) they can't be removed.

Regardless of whether you have emissions testing, it is a federal felony to remove or disable any emissions device, punishable by a $2,500 fine. Just so you know what you're doing.

That being said....I did it....along with the other two.

...and if that's how they need to get to your wallet then they will do that.

They write the rules that we play by. I don't necessarily agree either since we have 2 cats already and most american cars only have 1, last I checked.

That's not why you have 3. Acura did that to raise the vehicle to ULEV-2 tier-x, bin-x under the EPA Standards. IOW - the emissions are well beyond the minimum requirement.

Yet, the Federal Offense thing remains; tampering with or removing, blah, blah, blah.

Gotta run, test pipe came in and I need to get it bolted up.

It's Federal. Removing or disabling a Catalytic Converter is illegal in all 50 states. And the District of Columbia.

It's against federal law to remove catalytic converters. Some states have laws reinforcing the federal law (NC is one of them). In those states, you could technically be charged/fined twice, at the state level and at the federal level.

Woah.

I read somewhere on this forum that removing the third cat would reduce your low-end torque. That it is only good to do it with other exhaust mods. Is that right?

Also ATLP sells the test pipe that can reuse the stock 3rd cat heat shield. Upon visual inspection they wouldn't see a difference. Right?

But if you want to be legal and better performance a hi-flow cat might be what you want. ATLP sells them as well.

Hey my rv6 testpipe installed, notice subtle lost of low end tq but more linear increase in acceleration on freeway, My CONCERN is something smells like it's burning something? smells like burnt plastics/tires? Some say it should smell like rotten eggs? I don't smell any eggs, is this BURNING smell normal with testpipe....TIA.

Yes, as I believe a full exhaust system should more the regain what you lost.

thats an outdated law... one created by the same people that created speed limit to curb gas consumption

but hey its true... and you can get screwed for it... so if you take the cats out.. search for sean's pics of the procats... use those as evidence that your factory cats failed

that or high tail it to canada

I live in Canada and its a felony here too, What I do not get is if you lose power or torque or w.e by deleting your 3rd cat and ur PreCats and regain the amount you lost with the exhaust what is the point of deleting them? I am one day away from ordering an exhaust ( xlr8 quads ) and a atlp with test pipe and rv6 precat delete. I do not want to lose any power or torque at all what do you guys suggest

The reason you get them is not because of the power, but because a 3rd cat delete will allow less restriction for the exhaust. In turn, these helps the exhaust provide a little more power.

Think of it as something like this.
Cat+New Exhaust=260
No Cat+New Exhaust=262-5. It's obviously not that dramatic, but it does increase the performance, not horsepower.

The torque lost is nothing to worry about. It's a little noticeable, but a new exhaust will instantly regain it. My car is pulling a little harder to 60 than before, now.

correct in part

the reason to get the 3rd cat replaced is because of this

the aftermarket jpipe's have a collector with a 2.5" diameter... if you keep the stock 3rd cat you bottle kneck your exhaust, the stock 3rd cat is a 2.25" diameter

we all replace the 3rd cat with the following alternatives
rv6-p resonated 3rd cat
rv6-p non resonated 3rd cat
rv6-p hiflow 3rd cat
atlp racepipe
atlp hiflow 3rd cat

ALL ARE 2.5"

tell the officer that you are allergic to cats...

well if you know the car can pass emission tests, why not do a test pipe and weld the cover on so it looks like you still have a visual cat down there...

That's when you get a new exhaust. I noticed my car had a bit more low end torque regained after the Quads.

Alright, its illegal but how would they ever find out? its not like they do random car checks. And where I get my emissions done the poeple there are in such a rush they dont look at anything.

I was thinking about this point the other day. Have you confirmed the stock cat has an inlet and outlet diameter of 2.25"?

If so, that means we should be able to see some improvement if we use one of the 3rd cat alternatives above... especially if one has a J pipe and catback exhaust. I think Excelerate offers a high flow cat as well. Josh, you may want to tell us about your product.

Thanks to Stillhere153 for compiling the potential list of options for us.
