3.5L swap into my TL j35z2 or j35z8

Hey guys. Got a couple questions about building a 3.5L block for my TL. I have 2 short blocks that came out of Hondas. One is a J35Z2 and one is a J35Z8. These run fine, just had the oil consumption problem so I would only need to re-ring them which isnt a problem. Anyone know the difference in these two short blocks? Which of these engines would work best in place a the 3.2? And would everyhting bolt up or would i need to do some modifications?

I of course plan on doing other mods while i have it apart.

Thanks

I dont think there any differences in them.. only reason I can think of between the Z2 & Z8 is probably from what year model it is... for example 90-91 Integras B18A and 92-93 B18B....

Aren't the bellhousing bolts and pattern completely different between the 3.2 and 3.5?

If I'm not mistaken, the oil consumption issue is due to a VCM issue that develops on the cylinder heads. Do a google search on it and you will see what I'm talking about. I believe its a class action lawsuit and Honda settled out of court to replace engines to any one who's vehicle has been affected.

OK so we are thinking bell housing bolts are different? Can anyone confirm this?

I work at a Honda dealer. At fist we were replacing short blocks for the oil consumption but now they have come out with the extended warranty and we are replacing the piston rings. I got these 2 blocks from back when we were replacing them so i know they run fine. It would be awsome it they fit in my TL.

The j35zX engines are the new style bell housings that began back in 07 with the MDX j37a1 as well as the TL j32a3 and also the j35a8 Type S motor. Only the 07+ j32a3 (gen 2) engines are compatible with the j35zX bell housings whereas the 04-06 j32a3 (gen 1) motors are not. So, compatibility all depends on what year TL you possess. The j35zX motors began production in 08 with the Accord and then entered Acura's lineup in 09. The Honda j35zX all had VCM with the exception of the 6mt Accord which had a standard valvetrain design similar to that of the 09+ TL j35z engine. The VCM in Honda's lineup hasn't ever been really perfected since it's debut in 05 (I think) and IMO, only caused more problems due to the added complexity of the design. This is where I was sort of going with my previous post above and even in my shop, I've seen numerous VCM related codes and issues with almost every Honda except the 6mt....but that's ONLY because it never had it. Lol.

And yes, you may be right on the ring ordeal as the concern generally begins with the oil levels disturbing low when the vehicle arrives and this is always followed with multiple VCM related DTC's retrieved from the PCM's current and history memory. I've had a few where all that was required was simply topping off the oil level but others required either short block replacement due to excessive blow-by and/or cylinder head (as well as VCM component) replacement. I've never actually determined that the ring blow-by was the root of the problem and made more since to me that the oil was being drawn through the valve guides due to 80% of these vehicles being fixed by installing new cylinder head(s). As I mentioned, I've even seen an article somewhere before that mentioned something about the a VCM issue in the head itself causing the problem...or at least I think I did. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right. Just stating my experience in the issue at hand with the newer Honda motors.
