2008 Base TL Performance Mods

Hey guys- I had a 2003 TL type S that i loved which i recently sold and upgraded to a 2008 Black TL base model. I really wanted a TL S in Black but i couldn't find one with low miles when i was in the market and somehow thought i could live with the base model.

I'm here to tell you i cannot live with the base TL - I'm kicking myself for buying it now! Anyways it's not realistic for me to sell it just to get a Type S. I have about $2000 bucks i want to spend on some performance mods to get some more power. I have done about a weeks worth of research on here before posting this and it seems doing these mods would give me the biggest gains:

1.RV6 J Pipe
2.Unorthodox Racing Crank Pulley
3. P2R Throttle Body Spacer
4. Fujita 5 Cold Air Intake
5. Exhaust ?

I'm a noob in terms of mods and my car is an automatic..

I would recommend RV6 for an exhaust, I also know a lot of guys on here are fans of ATLP.I've hear the Throttle Body Spacer isn't worth it.I would recommend A J-pipe, Pre-cat deletes/High-flowing Cats, and a good catback. That's always a great start.Good luck!

Also, there's a great thread at the top of this section listing out tons of different mods you can do...I would look into it.

Thanks for the input man! I've been referring to it a lot if this is the one your talking about- https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-performance-parts-modifications-112/performance-modifications-tl-owners-701772/

So far it looks like i'm going with the RV6 V3 Jpipe and V2 Precat delete (745.00) Threads on here say that this should offer up a 15-25whp power increase.

The next question is if i do the full RV6 exhaust.. Anybody know how much more of an increase i would be looking at?

My concern is that although i do want the power i don't want the ride to sound like a rice burner. With this proposed setup is there anyway i could sneak a resonator in down there to handle the sound?

You see good gains....search for Richie's thread about the true duals. He lists pretty much all the average gains you get from his setups. It's also on his site.

As for the resonator...yeah, you can throw one on there. He had a deal where he threw one in for free awhile back.

I'm sure with the full exhaust setup, you would be looking at about a 40WHP increase.

Message Richie for some kind of "bundle deal", he always helps AZ out.

Once you're done with that, I'd recommend doing some handling/suspension improvements. Coils and RSB would be even better than the three performance MODS IMO.

Cool, 40 WHP is about what I'm after- the 03 TL S i had was noticeably faster. Not an earth shattering difference but it was faster.

I'm going to get in touch with Richie tomorrow and see what the whole package is hitting for.

In regards to the suspension your right the rear sway bar is a must and when i change up the stock rims i will be looking into more suspension tweaks too. Thanks for all the help guys.

It's unrelated but I'm looking into the A-Spec body kit as well.

If you don't want to have to deal with rasp and putting a resonator in your exhaust you can opt for the High-Flow Precats from Richie as well.

I'd do Richie HFC, RV6 V3 J-Pipe and since you have a base model I don't think your rear bumper would fit a quad exhaust without modification so you can opt for some other type of catback like Comptech or Tanabe if you want quiet but loud when you get on it, or ATLP

^ to add, if you did want the quads you can always do some modifications to your base model bumper and get the type-s aspec rear bumper lip kit since you mentioned that you wanted an aspec kit.

Also look into an A-SPEC suspension. Definitely a good option.

Bumper-wise,if you want quads, you can do an a-spec rear lip, or the type-s bumper. Or just go with some nice single tips.

I'd recommend a j-pipe, CAI, lightweight crank pulley, a rear sway bar, and upgraded brakes to start.

Of course, we are going to recommend our XLR8 j-pipe. Here is a link to our newest pipe.

The AEM V2 CAI is our most popular intake for the 3rd gen TL; FUJITA is out of business or on their way out so I don't recommend their intake.

UR Lightweight Crank Pulley

Progress 24mm Adjustable Rear Sway Bar

And our XLR8 Brake Package:

Bolt-ons can only give you so much.
Supercharger will give you what bolt-ons can't give you.
Turbocharger will give you want both of the two's that can't give you.

Doing the bolt-ons would be a great next step for supercharge. IMO, turbo charging would be the best option... BUT go as low as your pockets go.

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to call Richie this week and buy all the stuff. Hopefully he can hook me up with a nice little package deal. In other news I'm also going to be doing the a-spec body kit and suspension so i should be ok as far the rear bumper being able to accommodate the exaust tips..

@j-rogsuperstar -- What do you mean don't forget the ECU? Your talking about reprogramming it?

I'll take some pics as i get the stuff installed. I'm sure i'll be crawling back on here with my tail in between my legs trying to get some help.

Exactly. My bad...I thought I answered.

But yeah, if you opt for FI, definitely go for the J&R. Seems to be the best tune available out there so far.
