I have Sirius in my 2003 TL and since I'm a Acura car nut and will either go with the TL or new RL when my lease is over, I have to get Sirius installed. I have listen to XM and I just think that Sirius has better programming.

XM is one of the best things about the TL. I groove on the 50s channel.

Sirius has better programming and technology. Had it FM modulated in my CL. I have the lifetime subscription on that unit, but don't want to mess with adding a box to the interior of my TL so I'm waiting for the Soundgate translator which may take forever to come out. I'm just dealing with XM during the trial period. channel 49 is the only good thing I have found so far. Having the hockey playoffs would be nice....
I might give my dad my sirius unit so he can drop it in his '03 TL. It fits in the "ashtray" perfectly.

XM has XMKids, Disney, NASCAR, CNBC. Sirius has NFL and what else?

Sirius has NPR Programming, which is one thing I understand that XM will never have. That alone is almost enough for me to switch. Still deciding ...

I really like the Lucy, Fred, and Ethels of the XM world. Although it seems like they are playing the Stone Roses a lot lately...

Sirius has all that except the NFL; however, they have NHL, NBA, and MLB. For sports, sirius is much better.

Sirius has FAR better content and better automobile contracts (Nissan/Infiniti, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, etc.). XM was the first and has better (more reliable) coverage.

Short-term XM is winning but long-term Sirius will be more popular (especially with 18-34 year olds). They just need better satellites.

Re: XM I'm sick and tired of hearing the same hip-hop urban mulyan crap music on channels 20/21/22 and the limited "dance" stuff on 80/81/82. Sirius has actual variety in the rock/pop area.

Silly question: Can we actually get Sirius on TL, maintaining the same equipment?

I love the Loft - channel 50 on XM. I might as well be programming it myself.

Sirius is not a FACTORY option so NO, it's not in the TL's as anything other than an aftermarket stereo (at this time).

XM uses more reliable technology in terms of complexity. They use two geostationary satellites opposed to Sirius' three inclined satellites. The satellites constantly have to switch off so they don't interefere with each other since Sirius only has two freq's to broadcast on. Although Sirius' signal does come in at a higher incline so buildings and tall obstructions don't cause as many problems as with XM. I think Sirius overhead is greater than XM's and they have a much much smaller userbase than XM. I think their chances of going under are high.

I'm no expert in this area, but it is my understanding that XM radio, due to their location in orbit (near the equator) requires many more ground repeaters then does sirius, since like you say, Sirius' satellites are at a higher incline (more northern). Requiring fewer ground repeaters, I would think would cost less in overhead for Sirius. As far as Sirius "going under", I hope not, since I have some stock in them. I really think both XM and sirius will do really well in the future and ultimately it comes down to personal preference.

How many classical channels does Sirus have? I have liked 110-1-2 so far, but would love even more variety. For my tastes, I don't give a rip about listening to sports.

Hmm - popped over to their web site. Nice line up in the rock/pop music categories. I think Sirius might have a better set of choices. They have the same three choices for classical (symphony, voice and pops). XM has better comedy/talk. The killer app for XM might be the traffic - expecially integrated with the Nav system. I think that is a killer app for nav systems - have said that for several years. Integrate real time traffic, and it is a must have. Integrate radar weather maps and traffic - wow!!

XM's 2 satellites sit around the equator...that means the footprint is nowhere near N. America. therefore they need LOTS of repeaters. This makes them a glorified FM system with a funny antenna. The sirius 3 satellite figure eight pattern puts them smack over N. America. better footprint. As for overhead... I think XM has spent much more money than Sirius. Both companies will do well. The question is whether or you appreciate music or corporate hype????

P.S. in regards to the Siirus in the TL without messing with the factory stuff... It is coming in the form of a soundgate translator and sirius tuner and antenna. I talked to Soundgate last week and they say sometime over the summer at the earliest.

mlewbart, you do have a great point. The sirius satellites do have a much better footprint, and the system can work with only one satellite overhead. Depends how much it costs to maintain more satellites versus the ground repeaters. I know that sirius has a fourth satellite in storage incase one of the three in orbit goes down. I wouldn't know for sure without knowing real world cost figures, but I know sirius is going to have to pay for more launchs and replace more satellites than XM in the long run. I wouldn't know though, it's probably cheaper than establishing all the repeaters. XM in my opinion has done a much better job at publicity than sirius has.

One thing never mentioned was that with a Sirious account, you can stream music to your computer. I don't think XM has this. If it does, pelase fill me in on how to sign up.

Several of my co-workers have Sirius and they seem much more excited about it than I am about XM. If it wasn't for the comedy station (150) I probably would have canceled it. That station makes rush hour traffic a little more bearible.

For those who have listened to both...

Is there any advantage in music quality from one to the other?

XM to Sirius

Yes! I was at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and saw in both the Sirius and XM booths that they make adapters that can transform your factory installed XM (or Sirius) radios into XM (or Sirius) whichever you have installed factory-wise. So, for instance, if you prefer Sirius in your TL and DO NOT want to have to pull out the factory radio, call Sirius and see about getting one of their adapters to switch your XM to Sirius. I think this idea was very cool and is great for these companies to do to get more people who don't want to install after-market radios, etc. just to get their programming.

Well, ¿GotJazz? - you're partly right, partly wrong.

http://www.xmradio.com/programming/c...age.jsp?ch=133

While it isn't exclusively NPR programming, WBUR is an NPR station.

mlewbart,

Can you send a link or explain the Soundgate Translator in more detail? I'd be interested in something that uses the existing factory TL stereo but can "translate" to Sirius, if thats what it does.

Thanks!

Soundgate just sent me an e-mail to my question. I asked if they were going to make a Kenwood adapter for Sirius and he said it was on there radar and they would be doing it soon, so therefore had no dates. I also asked if that adapter would do Sirius & Music Keg which I have both. Hopefully I'll get an answer eventually ....

I think channel 144 is the NASCAR Channel.

The NPR Channel is supposed to be on 133, starting on September 1. Bob Edwards' show starts on October 4.

You can get an XMPC card - check the XM website. Otherwise I have used a line in to record music on CD's for bike rides.
