XM not sounding so hot.

I have an 04 tl and XM service. I listen to mostly XMU which I imagine plays alot of low quality mp3's but with such a nice sound system I feel it should sound better...is this a car issue or a XM issue??

Depends-- some XM stations run more compression than others.

How do other stations, like '80s, '90s or XM-81, sound in your TL?
If they sound better, it's the station.

If they all sound clipped, etc., then it's the service.

Welcome to AZ.

For awhile there one of the comedy channels had an annoying rattle on it which sounded just like a blown speaker. I've noticed that XM radio has dubious quality sometimes. And I suspect that most if not all of the stations are routed through a little closet in a building somewhere where they're sent up to the satellite, and that people don't look in there very often to see if something's out of whack. It took probably two weeks before they finally fixed the rattle on that channel.

Some stations are better than others. Prob the service. I had a 2010 TL as a loaner and it sounded far superior, thats what made me curious.

to give you an idea how great the '09 TL sound system is, check out this article

you can't expect the 4g to not top the older model, but that doesn't mean the older model still isn't awesome :-D

That's pretty much like the Consumer Reports reviews of sports cars. Honestly, the 4g TL system is ok at best.

I don't know about you, but my service quality has really gone downhill over the past year or so. I will be driving along with a clear view of the sky, and I will get several brownouts or dead air for a second or two and then the service comes back. It never happened before the merger and I think Sirius uses lower quality equipment than XM used; at least that's what I heard from a few early former XM employees. It beats normal broadcast radio but they better get their stuff together as they will continue to lose subscribers due to increasing costs and poor service.
