Would you buy this system?
Man, you're against everything lol. That's what CLtotheTL32 has and he says he loves it.

. About my jl w3's, they're ok. They get decently loud b/c I've got them in a 3 cu.ft. box tuned at 33hz. They can get a little muddy if there's a punchy, deep bass. I'm trying to sell them right now and maybe try a single 12" setup for SQ...who knows haha. I don't want to build another box already so I might just sell the w3's and do a different dual 10" setup.
The only issue about getting used is that most of the stuff is entry level or barely acceptable. That is why you have to be patient. I don't particularly care for JL Audio subs, but they are some of the better run-of-the-mill stuff. Either the W6 or W7 that I linked would blow away anything else posted, and they come with boxes already (who knows how good they are, but the come with them). There are usually better quality amps on CL because some of the big-name companies still make some good amps on their higher end.
You could start to frequent some of the national car audio boards for good used stuff too. Either way, don't buy some trash when you could have something decent or good for the same money with some patience. You would be blown away by some of the stuff that I have gotten on the local Craigslist, including some super high-end stuff... but I have plenty of time and always bring cash.
If the celica is a hatchback, you cannot compare subs in hatches, or SUVs, to subs in trunks. They are different animals and that same setup might sound like shit in a trunk.

What do you think of the 12?? http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/s...4.html#reviews
And considering it is a 300w sub, is it going to be loud? Have you ever tried these subs? And is there a $150ish amp that will go well with that?

Haha classic. There's a reason why you type in "Alphasonic (k)" into google and don't get anything on DIY, caraudio, reviews, etc. Like said before, hatch's can sound much different so its hard to make judgement compared to a trunk car.
The SSA DCON is known as a very nice SQ/SQL driver that can handle more than rated power...nice sub. Now you stated one thing in your post and thats the wattage. One thing you should know that the "wattage" rating isn't the only thing that makes a sub what it is. There are many more specs that you should look at, along with reviews if you can't hear the sub in person, in order to get the jist of the sub. You told me that you wanted to concentrate more on the SQ-SQL spectrum than the SQL-SPL spectrum.
SQ----SQL----SPL
.....^
You want here correct?
So lets recommend him more of these type drivers like the DCON that can pair well with a used to slightly cheap amp (500-800 watts). Like JDA stated, amps are much easier b/c alpine, kicker and all those other shop brands make decent to good amps, and since most people shop at these places..you can find good deals on used amps. Concentrate on the driver, your LOC, amp kit, installation and box (hopefully you can do it....well at least the box), and deadener if you have $ left over.
SSA DCON
Image Dynamics IDQ (if your so lucky to find an IDmax...buy it!)
DC Level 3
FI Q
ARC d2
JBL gti mkII
SI Mag d2
RE SE
TC Sounds (not sure of model)
...I could keep going lol. Which reminds me, sometime when I get free time and my professors stop being asses and assigning stuff (senior in Petroleum Geology...ugh hard)....I will make a list of SQ, SQL, SPL drivers in different price categories. That way we can always refer people to it
Edit: What's your max budget for this setup? Subs/box, install (if you can't), LOC, amp, amp kit

Ok, I've made my decision...almost lol.
I've narrowed it down to 3 subs:
Fi X12
12" SSA DCON 12D4/S4
Alpine Type-R SWR-1242D (I know you some of you guys say it's not a SQ sub, but reviews and CLtotheTL32 has it and say it sounds incredible...SQ and SPL. It is a 500w. while the Fi X/DCON have 250-300. I do look for SQ more, but I also want some output. I want to be able to feel a decent upgrade from my stock system right now.)

I would not generally put Alpine subs in the same league as FI and Sound Solutions. Even though I generally think that Type Rs are below average for my tastes, I have not heard the Fi X for comparison. The DCON is a good sub.
So the 12" SSA DCON 12D4/S4 is a good sub? How does it hit?
The dcon performs well ported and should give you plenty of umph for a low RMS sub (though they can take double RMS easy). If your questioning how loud you want it then maybe you want more spl oriented setup now?
Not too sure about how you'd get everything else though with around $250. That's amp, LOC, amp kit, box. Gonna be close
Too bad your not closer. I'm selling my JL w3v3 10's, kicker 400.1 and my 33hz box for $400

This is the good (and sometimes the bad). There are sooo many subs out there and everyone has different taste, cars, equipment, etc so it's really a guessing game. By no means am I meaning to be rude...but if you think that the Alphasonik subs sounded good then anything in this thread will blow your mind. Give it the rated (or more) rms, put it in a well built ported box and let her shine. I'm a big fan of ported boxes, though they get a bad rap for only being for rap. A well built/tuned ported box can sound just as good as a sealed box I believe.
He doesn't have enough $$ to get 2. A 12" dcon in a ported box off around 400-500 watts will sound great. No way in hell would I consider the factory 8" a "sub". An 8" with that structure on hardly any power...that's a midbass. A dcon or any other sub recommend will sound great and should hit plenty hard for you.
If your concern is how hard it will "hit you in the chest" type feeling...thats kinda frequency dependent and you'll also need A LOT more power.

Well I HAD an Alpine type R 10 inch in a ported kicker box and an Alpine MR500 amp, which was more than enough power for the sub and it bumped pretty loud and clean. I got them all for $330 brand new but I sold the setup not long ago cuz that shit was too loud.
