Why does playing mpegs sound better than ipod using Treo 650?

Why does playing mpegs sound better than ipod using Treo 650?
I was able to hook up my Treo using the same sony tape adapter but the music videos sound much better than mp3s in ipod, anyone know why?

Same bitrate? My guess is it might be a volume issue. If the volume of the iPod is too hot, it will cause distortion through the cassette adapter. Try adjusting the volume to see if it changes the sound quality.
