What volume level does everyone listen to CDs at??
I was just curious as I've read that some people listen to the stereo at 30+??? I find that crazy! I find it too loud at 6... I usually run it at about 2-4!
I am with Pika on this, I listen to mine at 6 and 10 would be about max for me. I think that 30 would be unbearable, but this brings up a good point. I have often wondered if there is a difference from TL to TL in the level displayed on the screen to what actually comes out of the speakers. I say this because level 2 in my car is actually quite loud, especially if you are not moving and I have often wished for a couple of steps between 0 and 2. Anyone else feel this way?
Every CD DVD audio disc will be different due to recording level at the studio. But I usually go from 30-35 on cd's. Some I can go full, but not many. On XM radio I go full +40 and get no distortion. Needs a few more watts and better tweeters for XM. But cd's dvd audio disc sound much cleared and louder.

But then I get in my max'd out stage everynow and then and slam around
I have a 07 CMP TL and I usually have it around 6-8, but for me jamming at 10, listening to Warren G's 'Regulators' is good for me! Hell, it rattles my trunk at that level and I can't imagine what it would do if it was at some levels reported here!!!!
Dang.... either the volume levels are not standardized, fish008 and I have really sensitive hearing, you guys have bad hearing, or you guys have a really high pain threshold!!!!
Well, one last question for you guys that play music around 30+... is this on highways/freeways? I notice that if I turn SVC off, I have to go to about 15 to hear the music since road noise in this car is a bit louder than I'm used to.

it all depends. XM is somewhere between 20-30, CDs and DVD-As are 10-30, radio varies but is similar to XM and when i use my ipod i use a tape adaptor and that varies based on the CD that was downloaded (and the ipod's volume is usually set just below max). so it is sometimes at 10-15, other times at 20-30. DVD-As are by far the loudest and most clear. i just wish there were more out there. i cant even hear much if it is below 8-10.
and yes, the driving conditions, fan level, windows open or closed all make a difference. i could get by listening at 10-20 if all are off, but it is usually between 20-30. i dont think my hearing is that bad but i know for a fact that my sensitivity to loud music is almost non-existant. except for long road trips, then the volume will vary.

Usually around 6-10. If I'm using my iPod adaptor then 12-16 That's so it'll be just loud enough for me to hear.
If I'm in the car alone it's usually at 20+ and I've taken the iPod up to max before.

I was curious, what actual level in db-spl average were people listening at? As there is quite a bit of difference in recorded levels of cd's , DVD-A's etc. My average listening levels are probably in the 80-95 db-spl range, depending on road conditions, etc. This can result in volume settings anywhere from 15 to about 30, (depending on source) unless I really want to crank it! The easiest way to measure this would be with the Radio Shack sound level meter, that has been referred to in other posts.
Some tunes simply ask for high volume: I give them 32
If you want to have a conversation going, don't go above 8
What I find annoying is the coarse quantification of the volume at low levels. Sometimes 2 is too loud and 1 is too soft. But sometimes, with the engine off waiting for someone or something, level 1 is too loud for me!

i want mine louder! I'm always listening to it at 40, if i'm just cruisin then maybe 30, but i love my music and i love it loud, that's why i dropped 2k into my sound system in my old nissan frontier (way better quality then what i have now, but oh well)
Usually between 1-17, I don't think I've come close to max ever... I don't want to wreck the tweeters. Sometimes its nice to turn it off and just listen to the sound of the car too, I do that on occasion.
usually 2-8, 8 if i am on a highway, around 3-5 on local. I find 8 to be loud with the windows shut in the city, eityher you guys have low volume sources, bad spaekers or bad hearing...

Not necessarily, but they will have a hearing problem in about 2 years.
My volume is usually between 5 and 10 for CDs, XM, cassettes and radio. The volume is set between 12 and 20 when I feel like rocking out and the windows and/or sunroof are open. Max volume has been about 25 for a low level source (usually a cassette). Oh, and I rarely drive consistently above 50 mph with the windows open.
honestly said it also has to do with the music quality of the cds ... especially in the case of burned cd's. Before getting my sub/amp, I used to listen to music at around 5 on the streets, 6-9 on the highway ... after getting the sub/amp, I now listen to music at around 7 for streets, 8-10 on the highway just because I like the physical thump from the bass
however, I always try to keep it somewhat low so that I can preserve my hearing lol

At highway speeds with the windows down, you can go to 30 just to get past the wind noise. With the windows up, it's hard to imagine listening at that level. The windows would bounce too much of the sound back at you!
Do the 07's have speed-sensitive volume or an ambient-noise sensor to turn the volume up if they surroundings are noisier?

Yes, the 07's have noise sensitive volume - noise from engine like when you accelerate. It actually gives you 3 settings - low (less sensitive), mid (normal), high (very sensitive). So whatever your settings, your music will automatically go loud to cover engine noise. At least my base 07 TL with Nav has it.
Also, I don't think i've gone above volume 10 on my TL. at level 10 it's already too loud even if windows are down.
Blown Speakers
I have allready blown the sub and front right door speaker from listening at about 20!!!??? I usually have the bass at about +2 and the sub at +1 or +2. What do you guys set those to? this is getting expensive!
The factory system (my opinion) is a POS, 25-30 is about the best volume after that it doesn't sound any louder it just sounds distorted. Even when the volume was at that level I could still have a conversation over the music, except if the ipod was playing. I had to upgrade my factory system, it just wasn't enough for me. I like to FEEL my music, not just hear it

HAHAHA, I'm like that with my boyfriend... feel the love!During normal commute hours though, I'm usually about 4-10 (seem to got a lot of sirens from ambulances or cops on a car chase, etc in LA and I gotta keep my eyes and ears open... )

I blew my left front door speaker and my 45watt per channel JL Audio amp. My replacement Alpine amps get pretty hot but I have them well ventilated. I like feeling my music. I'm not big on hip-hop or rap. I listen to mostly rock, classic rock, alternative, jazz, CCM.

If I am alone anywhere from 20-40, some good Blue Man Group can be mid 30's unfortunatley the damn ELS flattens out big time and looses bottom end by the 30's. Best dynamic range seems to max out in the mid 20's depending on CD. Now DVD-A I can easily go into 30-40 since I find most DVD-A seperates the channales so less volume and power being driven into all speakers. The ELS pretty much blows on anything except DVD-A, where it is still grossly underpowered, but at least is capabale of producing clean sound. And while not everyone may like Flamenco guitar, pick up a DVD-A by Esteban it really shows off the ELS nicely, clean and crisp. BMG DVD-A is a good listen, but does nto really show off ELS becasue it really needs more power.
Are the volume controls the same across all the model years?
I'm having a hard time believing people who turn their volume to 20+ consistently. Like if I turn my volume past 10, it's already pretty hard to conduct a simple conversation with the person on your right without yelling at each other.
And I do believe I turn up my music quite loud too. My friends always ask me why I turn up my music so loud when my volume setting is only at around 8-10.

TL's come with "Active Noise Cancellation". When noise in the cabin gets louder, the subwoofer in the back gets louder to compensate for the noise.
btw, its usually between 4-8 for me.
