Well this is interesting (navi problem)

Hmmnn... seems that my navi doesn't like to work anymore. I get a "disc read error... consult dealer" message

Anyone else run into this yet?

Hehehe... looks like I might be getting a new DVD for free

First, check in your trunk to make sure that something hasnt "opened" the cpu door.

already did... not a problem

additionally it seems to work intermittently now... one day without it, then it works a little, then down again

Hopefully, it's not the player itself and it's just a bad disc. If you're under warranty, though, either should be fine.

i got that message once, there was a heavy package in my trunk, when i made a shapr turn it smacked the navi system, and that message came up

the way i fixed it was press the 3 buttons to get you into the hidden menu, then choose reinstall/download software. system rebooted and it's been working since

I get the read error in my 05 when it's very hot and the car parked in the sun for a while. But the system just reboot's itself after a few seconds (without turning off the car or any intervention from me). It only happens occasionally so I am not going to bother asking them to fix it since odds are the dealer will probably screw up something else. If the DVD itself is faulty I bet they will replace it with the same version. If you do suceed it getting them to give you the new (I believe coming Oct 05) version please let us know and I'll try to do the same

The same thing just started happening with me. It used to only work sometimes. Now it doesn't work at all. The disc looks fine too.

take it to the dealer for a drive replacement if you are under warranty. If not, that's a 2K dollar part, but you can send it to alpine and they can fix it for around 150 dollars.

I just started having the problem too. I tried everything; reload software etc but to no avail. I took it to the dealer and have been quoted $3500 to fix. How do I send it to Alpine?

Same thing happened to me last week Wednesday. I start the car after lunch to go back to work and I got the same DVD error. (I've never had a problem with my Navi since I got the car back in August of 07.). When I got home that evening, I cleaned the DVD, did the "three-button reset" and even disconnected the battery for an hour.... all to no avail. I've got an appointment at the dealer this Saturday for service (fortunately still under factory warranty).

Call up alpine (go to their site) and tell them that the dealer said to call you and to get it fixed from you since you are the manufacturer of the dvd drive.

Unless your car is out of warranty, the dealer should take up the tab for this.
If you'd like to contact Alpine OEM repairs directly, you can reach them at 310.326.8000 and set up a repair order. It will cost $150, flat fee. You pay for shipping it to them. They send it back in a week and perform any required repairs.
I did this when I *thought* I had a defective DVD drive. I did a non-navi to navi conversion with parts I picked up at a salvage yard. Turned out that I just needed an updated navi dvd disc and no repair was necessary.

also there is a new TSB on this, I suggest you look for it and hand it to your dealer. It involves the DVD player scratching the disk, so check your disks for scratches.

i just had the problem start yesterday and ordered an new DVD. hopefully that's the fix otherwise I'll send mine back to alpine too. It's worth 1 week and $150 of inconvenience over replacing the unit.

It's amazing how much it impacts me without having it work, even though I didn't use the navigation all that much.

I had started another thread before finding this with my experience...got pics there also.

Sorry to resurrect old thread, but my nav is on the fritz. I find it hard to believe a new DVD might fix it, but I might give it a try. How did yours end up?

Mine reboots a lot, or the map starts sliding all over the place (doesn't know where I am). I am not willing to put many hundreds into fixing it, I'll buy a window mount instead. But if the hardware is pretty reliable and the disc has proven to be the problem for more than a couple folks, I'll try that.

Thanks.

Pop out the existing DVD from the trunk drive, make sure it's clean and undamaged, then pop it back in again. If the DVD is bad, replace it.

Otherwise, you can pull the drive, ship it to Alpine and have it repaired for $150-$200 (there are posts in several threads here on AZ about that).

G/L!

had same problem in my 2007 TL-S, drive was scratching the disc so i had to buy a new disc, but i took a cheaper way to solving the problem, i just made copies of the nav disc and i'm keeping the original out of the unit. i rather spend $3 on a DL disc than change or have the unit repaired (don't have warranty anymore). I changed the disc 3 months ago and its still working, so hopefully it will last 1 year and thats $3 a year, if i keep the car for 10 yrs its $30. Even at every 3 months its $12 a year... Just my cheap way out in these hard times....
