Video Interface and Backup Cam install

Hello All!

I've been lurking for the past couple of weeks now and I am hoping someone here can help me.

I currently own a 2006 TL with Navigation. My first DIY project I completed in November was the installation of the BT45-HON3 via the XM tuner in the trunk in which I also relayed USB and aux cable into the armrest. HFL was not working with my iPhone 6S on iOS10 so I ultimately decided to go with this option to give some hands-free calling features as well as audio Bluetooth streaming.

Now I am interested installing the following and/or something similar/better;
  1. video interface module (NAVIKS)
  2. wireless smartphone mirroring module (NAVIKS) - would like to mirror smartphone for google maps, YouTube, etc. Instead of doing a whole unit replacement
  3. backup camera (Esky)
The points on where I believe I have confirmed but still have some confusion around are;If anybody could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Opinions are welcomed, as I am sure there might be better ideas out there. However, I do believe that this is an easier option than changing out the entire OEM radio for an aftermarket radio or a tablet.

Thanks in advance!

Elhason8,

I am going through the same issues you are right now and have not completed it yet but it pretty much mirrors yours.

The Naviks does come with instructions telling you to tap into the #2 and #4 from the 8pin on the back of the navi. The naviks instructions will tell you which wire for power and where to tap for the backup camera, for example the reverse lights.

I don't know if this this TSX aux video hack will work the same with our navi because if it is, we only need less than $10 in parts: https://acurazine.com/forums/audio-v...needed-901077/

thanks for the reply.

How are you tapping into the wires for power? I read somewhere here on acurazine that tapping into wires wasn't a good idea but now I can't find that thread.

I did find that thread which is where a small part of my confusion came from. I did reach out to the email provided in that thread and spoke with that guy that builds the wire. According to him, the 2006 TL navigation does not have the option natively for video so 2006 TL owners do need a video interface module in order for it to work.

Are you doing both smartphone mirrong and camera or just the backup camera?

would you mind sharing pictures of your installation?

have you looked into a tablet install? the nexus 7 works really well with an oem navigation setup and looks completely plug and play. you won't need to mirror your phone at all and could tether your phone to the tablet. you can get a rear view camera and basically anything else you need. total cost is about 300 if you get a really good DAC (essentially a music amplifier to play through the tablet), but goes down to about 225 if you still use your existing bluetooth setup

I have looked at it but honestly feel it would be too much of a project that I don't feel completely comfortable doing.

Saw someone DIY on here and they did a really good job. If I could pull that off then it might be something to consider.

you'll have a really good DIY coming from me also (type s with a 2013 nexus 7 replacing oem nav and adding a fully functional back up cam....there's variations of all that but not that exact combo, which IMO is the best setup out of the tablet installs). it is a lot of work but isn't too bad. just wanted to throw it out there!

i looked into naviks/navtool prior to going the tablet route and it will get your where you're going, but downside is you have to plug your phone into a cord each time (technology can't do wireless yet for that data transfer)

looking forward to it.

I spoke to tech support from NAVIKS and he told me that the only thing I can't do with the wireless mirroring device they del is Netflix and another video app (don't recall at the moment) . But I don't use either of the options he told me so that's why I was thinking that this would be the easier option.

Another thing, not sure my wife would appreciate the amount of time it would take me to complete a tablet install. I'm somewhat of a perfectionist. Which can be a good and bad thing with this types of DIY projects.

oh ok if they have wireless maybe that would be a good option. from when i talked to naviks and navtool (along with double din manufacturers a few months ago), it seemed like wireless was still far away, maybe that's changed

^^ I'm hoping this weekend. I finished my install this week and I made 4-5 YouTube videos that can hopefully help people do the same install. Look out for my thread in the upcoming week!
