Trouble with 06 TL Navigation Unit

My nav unit in my 06 TL 5AT went out and I need advice on whether or not to replace the nav unit with either an 06 nav unit, an 08 nav unit, or an aftermarket unit.

The dealer that I spoke to said that there was no issue with the screen from what they could tell, but that there was just an issue with the dvd unit in the trunk. They quoted me $845 to fix the issue, but at the time I could not bring myself to pay that much and now I'm faced with deciding to do that or finding an alternative.

Additionally if I wanted to get an updated head unit, I realize that the Handsfreelink is connected to the nav unit. Is there a way to get an aftermarket head unit that could be put in place of the nav unit that would still allow for use of the Handfreelink?

Alpine will repair the unit for $480 or so, if that is a potential option.

Ours just went out yesterday... stuck at the Acura welcome screen... then it kept flashing... and now it is completely black.

So irritated... out of warranty and the fix will be expensive.

I haven't checked the fuse... really hoping it is due to that but it does not appear so based on the problems everyone has faced with the dvd player.

Sucks that Alpine raised the price by that much in the last couple years.

Additional DIY option per member Sutitan, assuming you ran a CD lens cleaner already and it didn't work, is to partially disassemble the unit to clean the lens manually: https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-audio-bluetooth-electronics-navigation-94/diy-how-fix-navi-disk-read-errors-873489/.

That's a really helpful thread about cleaning the lens... but before I attempt this.

I've done multiple searches... what about this situation?

There is no sound from the dvd player... meaning, it doesn't appear as if it is working... no disc spinning if there is no sound?

Screen is completely black when car is started... then grey "snowy" vertical bars appear and flash.

All fuses check out OK.

Am I doomed to send to Alpine? One junkyard quoted $525... but wouldn't that used dvd player break down eventually?

Could really use some help if someone has experienced this exact situation that I have.
