Smile Top Left Section of Steering Wheel-Electronics Died

Hi all,

I have an '06 AM at about 50k miles which has been treating me great.

Unfortunately the top left portion of my steering wheel electronics have stopped functioning... (VOL , CH, and MODE) I've attached a pic for reference

-The 'down' portion of the VOL button no longer "clicks" or "pushes" in...it's almost as if it's stuck. I can still click/push the top half of the VOL button, it just doesn't do anything

-The bottom 2 buttons still work (the 2 bluetooth phone icons)

-Also, it seems that the lighting has gone out on the VOL/CH buttons but MODE still lights up

-If it matters, I've seen lots of threads about bluetooth failing and replacing the module (my searches resulted in threads about bluetooth or iDevices)...I don't care about the bluetooth, I just want the volume and seek/skip buttons to work again!

Any input or advice would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks,
Travis

Sounds like you need a new switch. They're cheap if you buy them from a dealer online you'll usually get wholesale pricing.

A new switch? as in an electronic switch or the actual volume button (which i don't think is the problem)

Would you mind elaborating on this switch?

Thanks a lot!

The assembly is held in place by 3 screws behind the SW and can be remove once the airbag is out...it's pretty simple. From there, there will be 3 more smaller screws to remove the silver housing. Take the housing off and inspect for debris. If there's any damage to the button dimensions and lever, you'll see if right away - it'll be readily apprent.

From the factory, there's a fine film of lube on the perimeter of each button...sounds crazy, and I am not shitting you, but you may just need to lubricate them

Thanks for the response. Removal of the airbag is a simple process?

I think i'll look into doing this but it seems a little more complicated than you make it sound! I would be surprised if this was an issue of something preventing the buttons from function, since only the 1 end of 1 button sticks...but I would be happy if this was the actual issue!
