Subwoofer cuts out at high volume?

Hey guys, got an old sony amplifier 1200w to be specific, when i turn up the volume on the head unit above like 23 it cuts and distorts the subwoofer. no matter how low i have the gain set. I dont know what to do i've checked the ground, and i've used the guides online for the ground and high level input into my amp. My subwoofer is a 10'' alpine type-r, and i've tried it with another subwoofer and its the same problem. any ideas? should i recheck the ground? it slams when i have the volume below 20-23 and i can crank the gain all the way up. but after 20-23 volume it stops and sounds really distorted. cutting in and out.

check your ground first. If it still does it you may need a larger power wire or to lower down the gains.

This would be my suggestion.

Your amp is a 1,200w amp. Your sub is a 500w MAX RMS sub. Check your gains.

^^^

You know, I messed up what I said in my previous post. Sorry. Your sub has a peak power of1,500 watts.

I think you have to recheck all of your wiring, not just the ground.

Adjust your gains and frequency. You have a 10" so it can't play lot of the lower frequencies. Increase the frequency knob on your amp to the higher Hz and see what happens and see if it solves the clipping. I'm pretty sure it should.

And I dont think its the power or ground. Its just tuning on the AMP's EQ is where I'm putting my money. But what gauge wiring are you running anyways?

it sounds more then likely that your loc (line out converter) is overloading or shorting out at higher outputs. if there are pots on it.... turn them down and adjust the gain accordingly on your amp.

^ Read the post. There's no mention of an LOC. The OP used high level inputs.

The problem is most likely a bad ground.

Wow those replies were fast! Well i'm not using a loc, i'm connected directly. I tried adjusting the frequencies and gain to no avail. When the weather outside is nicer, i'll have to adjust the ground cable and maybe move it to a different location? I'm using an 8awg wiring kit.

You want the shortest ground cable possible and the thickest cable you can afford.

In my opinion, 8awg is not thick enough. Use 4 or 0 gauge for ground and power. Since it will be a chore to rerun the power wire, then try using a thicker ground cable and a good ground closer to the amp.

I used the bolt on the floor of the trunk, all the way in the back near the rear seat, near the fuel pump. I've never had a problem with clipping or distortion.
