Sony Ericsson s710a

I would like to know when this phone will be available, how much
and how compatible it is with the TL's Bluetooth HFP.

- 3 band GSM (850, 1800, 1900)
- 1.3MP dig camera with 8x digital zoom (& night light)
- 2.3" scratch proof screen (262k colors : 240x320)
- Talk time: 7h, standby: 300h !
- Java
- EDGE Technology for fast connection
- MusicPlayer, MP3
- 40 polyphonic voices ring tones
- Memory Stick Duo expansion (32MB included)
- Bluetooth handsfree profile

I think cingular will be the only one offering it (in the US) at this point.

Cingular really f'ed up this one. It was supposed to be available in November, then December (a "technology reviewer" on one of the morning shows gave it a "top gifts for Christmas" nomination), and now "maybe the second or third week of January".

I'll tell you that although the specs seem great, it is a VERY large phone (too large for a phone w/o a Palm, BlackBerry or PocketPC functionality). It's a camera masquerading as a phone. Whereas my SE T610 fits nicely in my pocket, the S710a is uncomfortably large (1" thick!).

Bluetooth should function as well (if not better) than the other SE phones (which are still best-in-class).

Price will be $419.99 (as per Amazon).

Besides some particular features and GSM bands, this phone would be similar to S700i... https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89299

And, as long as nobody decided to change the way SE integrates the bluetooth, then it will integrate perfectly with the TL (all other SE's show CID, Battery & Signal strength)

The S710a was supposed to be released mid-november when Sony Ericsson was also going to announce new phones but they have kept all this under wraps. The last date that I read that it was going to be released was December 10th through the 15th and that didn't happen. According to resources though, beginning of January with also the release of the K300i which will be an entry level phone. By the end of March, there will be some really cool Sony Ericsson phones. As for the size, I disagree completely. When open, it stands very tall, not big. It fits in my pockets real well, be it khakis or even relaxed jeans. Many people are just used to very small phones these days. I really like the flat black housing of the S710a. I believe Cingular has a 6 month exclusive contract on this phone. Then again no one else would be able to use the 850mhz on the phone. With the way that T-Mobile is releasing phones these days...if they get the S700i in their lineup, I think I'll be retiring by then. As for linking up with HFL, both the s710a and s700i did a perfect job....I'm just trying to figure out the probem with the P910i and P910a and other pocket pc pda/phones. ugh.

1. To respectfully disagree, I believe that the S710a is a large phone. 1" thick is large. It's true that flip phones are thicker than 'candy bar' phones, but they are smaller in height. The S700i did not fit comfortably in my pants or suit jacket pocket. For comparison, my opinion is that the T610/616/630/637 is a good size.

2. For linking with HFL, I don't trust phones with a lot of features and a bloated OS. Treo 650 issues, Motorola a768 [Linux] issues, PocketPC issues - there's too much crap and they've focused no time on QA'ing the HFL profile.

I like the concept of the S710a, but I'll stick with a phone that's less than $410 and works with my car.

1) 1" is thick, not large. I was talking about footprint, not thickness cause even the Z600 is very thick for a phone but small in footprint size. You must have tight pants with small pockets. The T series...especially the T610 is borderline tiny for me but it definitely is a good size. Now the T650 or the F700i or whatever they call the new phone will be a size to see.

2) Sounds like your term of features is a phone that has a PDA built in. I think there is some legal discourse about having a PDA being used with any HFL system but I still have yet to see any case studies about them.

I like that black case also.
but I heard this model doesn't have the FM Radio tunner, as the s700 model.
maybe the triband feature took too much room inside the unit.

I also don't 1 inch it's big, since you have a 1.3 MP camera and
a full feature phone combined with a very large screen.

I use to carry the Motorola PageWritter 2000x which was bigger than a bar of soap, but I never put it in my pockets, that's what holsters are for.

the T610 was way too small for me, small keys,
& I was always afraid to drop it or scratch it
if It was in my pocket or my wife's purse.

but, it's good that we all have some variety to choose from...

Next February SE is coming out with some phones that will really make you go nuts...some of the concept drawings are eye catching. Next year might be the chance that we see phones that even I will like and enjoy using. With Cingular rolling out with 3G...the Sony Ericsson Z800 will be cool...it's going to be the OEM version of the V800 released by Vodafone in Europe.

I have a P910a, it is full of bugs. I have a S700i, it is full of bugs. I have a K700i, it is full of bugs.... get the picture? It's all relative for that matter because people will experience different things. Some people don't consider certain pauses to be bugs but when the phone/device is "thinking" Happens all the time. I like it when people say "Sony Ericsson is full of bugs" ... When I ask them exactly what it does, they can't point it out, then I smirk in victory. Do a firmware upgrade and it'll lessen the blow when an error occurs.

I had a chance to check out the s710a last Friday when it became available at the local corporate Cingular store. On the plus side the swivel is a very cool feature, and the camera was nice for a phone. On the negative side I thought that the plastic casing made it feel cheap (esp for the cost!), and I thought the buttons were too small.

Overall I was disappointed.

I'd postponed purchasing a new phone for several months waiting for this one through numerous delays. Five days before it came out I could no longer wait and ended up purchasing a Razr. I've been very satisfied with it. It looks sharp, sounds great, and works great with the HFL. I bought the Razr initially with the idea that I'd exchange it for the s710a if it came out during my 30 day trial period. At this point, however, I am sticking with my Razr!

The picture up there is very misleading with the keypad portion of the body. The color is a lighter grey than shown. I played with this awhile back along with its sibling, the S700i. Both feel very solid although I favor the S700i for over feel. Could it be the color that makes me feel a different way? Who knows... Firmware on the S710a is R1A033 so expect a good update coming soon since that firmware has been around since Nov/Dec I think.

My big gripe with the phone is the keys are inverted in shape making it weird to push them when text messaging but its not too bad. Between the S7x0 and the RZR, I would've chosen the S7x0. The RZR is ok... good gimmick to sell a V600 in aluminum-like casing. It'll be worth more in the long run but functionality wise, I'd get some swivel action.

Thoughts on S710a

I got this phone a couple of days ago and paired it with my TL without any problems. The one thing I noticed is that the speaker is quieter than with my T637. I have to turn the volume up to at least 27 to hear the other person as well as if my T637 was at 12. I re-paired it but it didn't make any difference. Any ideas?

Otherwise, it's a very nice phone with a nice, vivid screen and plenty of features. It's certainly bulkier but it fits fine inside the little cubbyhole in front of the shifter when I plug the charger to it. The screen does smudge easily, so I'm looking for screen protectors for it.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it and plan to keep it a while.

...Exim makes awesome screen protectors for the S7x0.

The test unit I had a long time ago was great. I'll probably run by the Cingular store and see what the deal is with the volume...when in doubt, use the speakerphone.

you are right about the picture, I went to see the real thing in a Cingular store, and the bottom part is more greyish... not too important to me, but would look better in all black.

I just picked up the phone a couple of weeks ago. I have no problem with it or pairing it up with my TL. I have to say this is the best phone i have ever had, but its a bit pricy though.

I have had this phone for 3 weeks now and I'm very impressed by it. New EDGE technology internet browsing is quick. Camera & Video by far is amazing...

I do have some concerns and wanted to ask some that have this phone already.

1. The volume on the Bluetooth when I answer it on the car is a bit low. Anyway you can turn it up.

2. Let's say you miss a call and your away from the phone, don't hear it ring or recieve a text mesage and again your away from the phone. Is there a way to for it to promt you with an audible noice that you have a miss call ... Know what I mean

Great phone but since it's new I have to agree it's a bit pricey.

I was able to trade in my 04 and release into a 05 with Navi payment went up by 20 dollars and lease term extended just 10 additional months.

I was excited to test out the pairing of the SONY s710a into the 05 and I can attest that it does correct all known bugs as compared to the 04.
