Sony Ericsson S710
I had my handfree unit replaced in my car. It was better, but the problem was still there. However when I used my gf's Nokia it was perfect. I've since decided to sell my S710a, it just doesn't work right with the 2004 TL.

I love phones. The k750 was a huge upgrade though. Camera alone is pure gold.
The K750i is a cool phone and I enjoyed all the features but for some reason, I just didn't like the phone. This was when I was on T-Mobile. Now that I switched to Cingular, it uses the AT&T 1900mhz towers a little better but it is not enough phone for me as I enjoy the company of my P910a more than anything. I can't wait for Sony Ericsson to introduce the P915 (P950?) and the P1000 models. Hopefully they will get the quad band thing down as well just like in the Z520a. S710a/S700i/K700i/P910a all have the best reception out of the semi-current models... I just can't put the k750i up there even after a quick upgrade with EMMA. I'm just praying for more umf from Sony Ericsson. Tomorrow, I switch back to a Nokia 6682 after 2+ years of using Sony Ericsson phones.

Did you finally fix this problem.... Please let me know since I need to find the soultion for this issue...

damn and I was thinking on getting this phone to replace my T637.
I am extremely frustrated with how my Acura dealer and Acura corporate are handling the issue with my SE S710.
I went to the dealer a few months ago and clearly showed them that the phone works perfectly in the 2005 Acura TL (that was on their lot), and fails in my 2004 TL. The dealer kept saying that I should call SE/Cingular to resolve the issue and the "problem is the phone, not the car". How could it be the phone if it works in the 2005? The 2005 must have some software improvements/fixes that allow this.
I tried to get the dealer to put the 2005 part but they said it would void warranty and they would not budge unless Acura corporate gave approval. So enough with the dealer, I decided to call corporate.
They arranged a meeting at the dealer to examine the problem, and again blamed the phone. I clearly indicated to the rep that the Acura site indicates Sony Ericsson S710 support under Comfort and Convenience -> HandsFreeLink. How could they claim support and it does not work in the 2004 TL? At least the website should inidcate which year model is supported.
The major issue now is that carriers such as Cingular don't carry old models such as SE T610/616/637. The dealer has one of these and keeps showing off how good it works. Obviously as we move forward these phones become discontinued, and this means the chances of obtaining one from the carrier are slim.
What frustrated me even further is that the Acura rep responsed "I don't know" to many of my questions, and that HandsFreeLink did the qualification not them. To the end user/owner, I don't care where the components came from. If Acura put them in the TL, it is their resposibility to support them. You can't say oh the brakes came from Brembo so I don't know about them. I asked for the qualification report for the S710 to see if they may have used a different fw level than mine (mine is at the latest level), and to also see if they qualified it on a 2005.
The option of putting the 2005 part in the 2004 seems impossible even if I accept voiding the warranty on the HandsFreeLink stuff... Acura still suggests talking to SE since they claim the phone is the problem. How could I call SE and say : The S710 works perfectly with my SE bluetooth headset, a 2005 TL, and not a 2004 TL. Seems ridiculous to me...

I would recommend contacting www.globalmob.com They are an authorized Sony Ericsson dealer and can probably help you out a bit. Before calling them, make sure you have your firmware version handy.

PLEASE keep us informed. I've not been back here in a while, but I'm glad you are being persistent about this. The HandsFreeLink people told me there's "no problem", and the dealer is not much help, but I've not pushed them too far yet -- almost waiting for a precedent first. Personally, I've just not used bluetooth with the car in a few months now as it's just not usable with the stutter.

I have already talked to almost every one in HandsFreeLink. No body seems to admit their fault and take responsibility. This is very frustrating. We need to get togather and press them to come up with the solution to this problem.

I have an S710a here that I plan on unlocking and hopefully flashing soon. We'll see what I can do with it.

I have an '04 TL and also noticed the echoing and low volume. The phone works fine with my Moto BT headset (HS810). Also my previous V551 and T68i worked fine with the TL.
I also tried out a test S710a handset (from work) earlier this year before they were released by Rogers Wireless here in Canada and it worked much better with mhy TL than my current S710a does.

Sounds like you just gave up. You're kidding yourself if you think some precedent is going to be set. There are probably less than 50 people with the S710a and a 2004 TL. If most have your attitude, why would Acura worry about it?
At least I got Acura to change the bluetooth unit in my car before I gave up. You must do the same if you have any hope of a fix.
So you gave up as well, and you're giving me a hard time? I'm not saying that I didn't try -- just that I couldn't get anyone to pay much attention to it. Initially, I did as much as I thought I could. Others have as well, and nobody yet has a solution.
Did your new BT module they gave you fix the problem? If not, then you got about as far as I did.

It's been a year since I've had my TL. I FINALLY got a Bluetooth Phone. So far I havn't noticed any major problems with my S710a. I love how it paired so quickly and how easy it is to use. People on the other end say that they can hear me clearly. My only concern is the occasional "holes" in the sound.
Does anyone know the best place to have the phone in the car to get the best sound quality?

Now that I've been using this phone for a few weeks, I can say that I really hate using it with my '04. I constantly have the "garbled" echoing sounds when people speak, the other party usually has a hard time hearing me. Also, a lot of calls just drop from bluetooth and transfer to the phone or when I try to make a call, the bluetooth isn't properly connected sometimes and it says "service is not available for [phone]".
I took my car in to the dealer and showed the service manager the problem, he asked me to try with another car on the lot. It worked fine with the '05. After checking with Honda Canada he says he can't do anything since its not necessarily supported on the '04 TLs since the list of compatible phones on the www.acura.ca site are strictly for current models. Its total BS.
So now I guess I need a new phone or a new car.... I use the phone a lot and its kind of pointless having a BT phone and car that don't speak.

I want to get this phone ASAP. Cingular has a killer deal on it right now, and the only thing stopping me is that Handsfreelink won't give me a clear answer on compatibility. So, I'll ask you guys. Will this phone work as well as my T637 in my 05 TL?
Thanks for your advise...

I read all 4 pages, just want a clear answer, and it looks like you gave me one.
Thanks for the reply...I think.
I spoke to HandsFreeLink support yesterday and I mentioned that I have been to my dealer and tested this phone out with a 2005 TL and it works fine. I mentioned that it works fine with my headset. (the TL uses the handsfree bluetooth profile, not headset). I also told them that the problems are being experienced by other 2004 TL owners as I have found on the internet.
I'm not sure if they'll have a good resolution for me or not, but the rep I was speaking to said he's going to refer my case over to his head office (Johnson Controls) in Michigan, and I should get an answer in about 5 business days.
I'm pulling at straws here, but if others with the same issue call them and ask them to really investigate and let them know what you've done so far, maybe they'll look into this more.
I was also speaking to Acura Canada, and they acknowledge that the handsfree systems are different in 2004 and 2005 TLs, which "may" explain the problems with 2004 vs. 2005.
I picked the TL over the G35 mainly because of the HFL, now I just use my bluetooth headset when I drive, kind of defeats the purpose of the built in handsfree.

S710a
Since I don't have access to the Owner's Link section at Acura.com, would someone mind posting a link to the PDF for compatible phones from there? I was told that the S710a is no longer considered compatible with Acura's HFL system and has been retracted from the list.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
You can get it from the non Owner's Link site:
http://www.acura.com
Go to the TL section
Click on the Comfort and Convenience link in the left pane
Click on the Handsfreelink link
Click on the picture of the phone
Click on "Find a Phone"
You are right -- the s710a is no longer there.

You mentioned you have no problems with your s710a... so no echoing and stutters? If this is the case, could you let us know what your firmware verision is by keying:
left * left left * left *
Thanks!
So is it safe to assume that the 710a will work in my 05 tL without any problems? I have gone through all 5 pages of this thread and it seems that the low volume and stuttering issues only happen on the 04, and when they tested it out on the 05 it worked fine. My T637 is really starting to piss me off, so I may be due for an upgrade soon. The s710a is the only other Cingular phone I really like and I can get one from EBAY for a fraction of the retail cost. Someone please confirm that the 710a works fine with the 05TL before I drop my cash on this phone. Thanks.

my s710a worked fine on my '05 TL , the volume was lower than my T616, but all i had to do was increase the radio volume for the HFL, and works fine. i didn't have any stuttering with it
Well, I finally got my Acura dealer to take a close look at the stuttering problem. They first tried it with a sales guy's Blackberry and noticed it right away. I didn't even have to have them use my phone. So they replaced the unit (not exactly sure what they replaced, but obviously something to do with the bluetooth or handsfree module) and now it's much better. I still get a bit of a studder, but it only happens around 10-15% of the time now, vs. 90% of the time before.
It's not perfect, but it's at least usable now.
Yes -- I do get a bit of delay using the button to answer the phone.

fyi, I worked with corporate Acura and handsfreelink. Finally handsfreelink provided a fix and corporate Acura authorized a replacement part. Had it installed last week. Now the S710 works perfectly in my 04.

Just bought an 06 TL and my s710 works perfectly fine w/ the HFL.
For those who have updated the firmware on the phone, can you please post a link that has the update available and instructions on what needs to be done?
Thanks in advance.
