# of Songs on DVD-A vs MP3 Disc format

What are the advantages of DVD-A over a MP3 disc?

Thanks to Adobeman for creating the DVD-A tool but for stereo songs what is the advantage?

A DVD-A disc can hold about 90 songs and an MP3 disc can hold about 80-90 depending on song size. As far as # of songs it is about the same and I can create 3-4 MP3 discs in the same time as one DVD-A.

I know you can do some 5.1 sound things but just curious as to what else. I guess going into it I thought 4.3GB of DVD space would hold 900 songs but it was really only 90 or so. I have 1000s of songs in MP3 format.

Thanks

99 Song Per Group

To add to this thread; there are 9 groups with up to 99 songs per group but the issue I thought was happening to me was the size of the file when converted into DVD-A. I thought that due to the size of the converted files you could only get about 90 songs total on the DVD-A so that fit nicely into one group.

What am I doing wrong? What should I do to get 500-700 songs on to one 4.3GB DVD disc?

If you want to get 500-700 songs in your car you should do an iPod integration kit like USASpec or Blizsafe. The iPod will even works with the controls on the HU and steering wheel which is amazing. I don't know why you would want to take so much time to burn discs and that shuffling through them, that could take forever. Plus you still have to somehow work new music on to discs when you get it. DVD-A is nice because of 5.1 but other than that the iPod should be fine unless you are an audiophile. I think that the iPod integration is the simple answer to all of your problems.

The advantage is that DVD-A discs actually play in 2004 - 2006 TLs. Those years don't play MP3s.

I know thats why I did the iPod integration. I use to burn CD-Rs with MP3s with folders and such and when I got the TL and it couldnt do that it was frustrating but at the same time making new discs got old and annoying. In my old car I had wired in my iPod and that was great except you had to use the contols on the iPod. So I got the TL and I had no way of playing my music without burning CD-Rs with 20 songs on each CD and no iPod. Then I found Acurazine and all my problems went away. I found out about the iPod integration and that solved my issues.

i guess besides being able to organize your music on a DVD-A disc into groups, the sound quality should be a little bit better (uncompressed vs. compressed audio)...the reason you're not getting 500-700 songs per DVD-A disc is because you're burning uncompressed audio, which makes the file sizes much bigger than MP3 files...

you mean mp3's? ...the answer is no...there's no such thing as an MP3 DVD...you have to burn an MP3 disc to a CD...

Hmmm. I always considered the real advantage was being able to put about 6 to 8 CDs worth of genuine CD quality music on one disk. It's always made little sense to me to expand mp3s to wavs.

For mp3s, a separate player with an aux in will always be most flexible and easy to navigate. IMHO I think that's true even of the cars that play mp3 CDs. Sad truth is I listen to more podcasts in the car than music.

Opps sorry for the spelling error...yes I meant mp3's.
So when I put several hundred songs on a dvd disc and play it either on my computer or my dvd player, it converts it to a cd disc?

Maybe I should re-phrase the question.....has anyone tried putting mp3 songs on a dvd disc [as a data disc] and played it on a 2007+ TL?

no no no...putting hundreds of songs on a dvd doesn't make it anything more than a dvd with hundreds of song on it...there's a structure (or format if you will) to a DVD-A disc and it's a little more than just some songs burned to a dvd...

i'm sure people have tried playing dvds with mp3's burned to them in their cars and i'm sure they have failed every time...i personally have never tried because i know what the outcome will be... 'error' followed by the disc being spit out by the stereo.....that's like filling your gas tank with water just to see if your car will run on it, but knowing it won't go anywhere....stupid analogy i know, but data discs and dvd-a discs are two completely different things for two completely different disc drives...

There are actually very few disc based MP3 players, DVD players or car stereo head units that can play MP3-DVDs (data disc or otherwise). I believe JVC produced a line of head units with "Gigarec" or "Gigadisc" (something like that). Remember, a stand-alone CD or DVD player or car stereo head unit is NOT a computer. Computers read the file systems on CDs and DVDs and play MP3s via a software decoder. Stand-alone units must rely on the hardware codecs built in to them to decode anything. On the face of it, it might make sense that a player that reads MP3-CDs would read an MP3-DVD. However, the playback methods are different. This is why standard DVD players make poor CD players and most audiofiles maintain separate units for CDs and DVDs. Regardless, it is never safe to assume that a player that can play MP3-CDs can play MP3-DVDs. And to answer your question, Yes, I believe a number of people here have tried MP3-DVDs in the 2007 TL and reported that it does not work.

I'm into sound quality. There is a noticable difference, especially with aftermarket speakers between a regular uncompressed CD and an mp3. I have burned all my store bought CDs onto DVDs so that I pretty can leave the discs in the player and never have to worry about scratches.

Only problem now is that after a month of playing, the car will sometimes skip to the next song in the middle of the previous one. It only does it on burned DVDs. Very annoying.

My friend with an IS350 has successfully put over 2,000 mp3 songs onto one DVD disc that plays in his car. He too hates tha lack of quality of mp3s and has since gone back to regular CDs.

There are lots of posts on this, but you can use Adobeman's program, Cirlinca's DVD Audio Solo or Discwelder Bronze to create the ISO and then burn with any program (Nero, Roxio or Deepburner). As to media, most people have better success with DVD-Rs rather than DVD+R. The most reflective media is best.

The Definitive DVD-Audio Guide v1.0...it's geared towards mostly Mac for now, but you if you're using PC you should be able to translate...

DVD-A (for PC) is also covered in the 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ.

One of the software not mentioned above (for Windows) is Ulead Burn.Now. It's been working great for me. That should give you give plenty of options to try. Good luck!
