Simple 10" box...
Hi all -
I'm looking for a simple single subwoofer build to accentuate the stock system. I have cabling run already and will keep the stock sub connected to the system.
I want to put a single 10" in as narrow (depth) a sealed box as I can; probably going to go with JL Audio sub and amp.
I don't need anything crazy... Rockford Fosgate was the end-all-be-all of amps/subs the last time I built an enclosure.
1. Single 10" sealed; probably 250W JL
2. Can I keep stock sub, does it matter?
3. Yes, I know about the microphone in the rear
Thoughts? Seem simple enough? Am I missing anything?
Thanks,
Ren

Disconnect the stock sub, it will only give you problems.
If space is a huge concern, you can give infinite baffle a try.
Don't put it in too small of a box or it will sound boomy and will lack low end. JL makes some great subs. There are others that might compete with their lower end subs for the price. I prefer the W6/7 subs.

I'm looking at picking up the JBL MS-10SD2 SLIM. I think it needs 1 to 1.5 cu.ft. box so I think I can get away with long/tall + shallow box. Need to measure the trunk.

You can also pick up one of the corner loaded boxes which take up very little trunk space.

Ok, so the lower tray is 31" lip to lip and 15" from the floor to the bottom of the rear deck cover. If I kept these two dimensions, I only need to make a 6" deep box to get 1.6 cubic feet.
That sized box shouldn't interfere with anything in the trunk and give me the extra bump I'm looking for.

Remember that most manufacturers recommend a box on the small side as a selling point. Most will sound better and require less power in a larger enclosure.

I would check out the SI BM if you're set of shallow mount. Make that box 2" deeper and you don't have to worry about shallow mounted subs!

If you're going to make a box that spans the entire width and height of the trunk, you might as well do just the front baffle, seal it to the car, forget the rest of the box and enjoy the additional space and great frequency response.

I don't think your calculations are correct. 31x15x6 comes out to 1cuft almost exactly. My box is 31.5x13x10 and it's roughly 1.67cuft before subwoofer displacement.

I'll do some research on the baffle, thanks for the suggestion.

I was basically meaning infinite baffle. It's not *that* much more trouble to just build a baffle and seal the trunk off from the cabin. If you're able to build your own box, you can easily do infinite baffle. Then you can throw a 12 or 15 in there and lose very, very little trunk space and have great SQ, lower power requirements, and if you want to bass out once in a while you'll have it available. With a 15" sub in there IB, you're still losing less space than the 10" in a box.

Google up how to make a fiberglass box. If you want a sealed deal, then you would probably never miss the corner space. They are easy to make, but can stink for a while and can get messy if you are not a careful kind of fabricator. You can get some nice corner and trunk gain this way too - you get none up against the back seat.
It does not matter how you get your space in a sealed box. You can make it as deep as the driver and stretch it out wide and tall if you want.
