FM Modulation doesn't work in the SF Bay Area w/sh$t because there is too much station overbleed, most every frequency is used.

PeterUBers- what is your setup? If it won't work with Navi - it just won't work

Wink

By looking at PeterUbers's profile, it looks like he has a Non-Nav setup.

With Nav setup, after looking all the possible setup, I think my final decision will be to have the audio shop spike into XM line to allow an AUX input and put in A/B switch for AUX or XM. (even though I don't subscribe to XM, it would be nice to keep it functional).

Has anyone done the same setup in the SD or LA area? If so, which shop do you took it to and how is it?

Waacow is correct, I am non-XM .. . and truly, tapping into the XM is the easiest, cheapest quick alternative to the blitzsafe's etc. I opted against a switch b/c I didn't take the time to find a nice a/b switch, but once I find one, I'll definitely add it to avoid manually switching b/w XM and MP3 input.

My setup will definitely work w/ Navi b/w it taps into the XM input from the trunk ... it has nothing to do w/ navi functionality...

I would like to know too, if it is easy, I might try to do it myself, else at least have the audio shop look at the instruction to make sure they didn't screw it up.

I went through two of those puppy's (static and various whiring noises) before I gave up and got the FM transmitter. That has worked great. But then I'm not near a major metro area to pick up cross FM chatter and static. Mostly in the country side of Connecticut. Even around Hartford it works just fine. Ultimately you want it plugged directly into the system (XM Radio hook up?) as it is in my BMW. Now that r-e-a-l-l-y works great.

I'm new to TL so don't hate me if it's a bit stupid question, but why do I need iPod when I can use TL's mp3 player?

Thanks.

nfinity -- not a stupid question -- the TL has no mp3 playing capability w/ it's CD player -- sadly enough. Hence, the mp3 integration.

Cassette player has lots of static/hiss and it's tinny ... integration is a audible step up.

Hey PeterUbers, I love your setup btw. But let me just explain, since I'm still waiting on my '05 TL, when I test drove the demo model and examined it the one I was looking at had MP3 player integrated in the audio system (at least what the sales person told me).

If it doesn't this is really BAD! I mean $35k that doesn't have MP3?! What a hell, even Kias and Hyundai have MP3 capability.

Salesperson didn't know what they were talking about. There is no integrated MP3 player, no direct integtration without after-market add-ons and not possible with the Navi version and..............the CD Player will not play MP3's (How 2002 is that?)

All of the TL's other pluses make up for this one big minus in the comparison categories.

i've heard of a way to split the xm signal with the ipod. there's a switch that will enable xm or the ipod. the stereo shop where i got my stuff done can do it, but because of my new system, replacement of the crappy stock tires, and a pair of jordans - this mod will have to wait for another month

I think that question has been anwsered for you already. If you want MP3 the Ipod is definitly the way to go. I have something like 200 CD's loaded on my unit (30gig) and it is sooooo nice. I will intergrate it through the XM radio as soon as my year subscription runs out. No way am I gonna pay $12.95 a month for XM. There isn't that much on there I like anyway. The Ipod intergrates in my BMW as they supply an aux plug so it is hooked directly into the Harmon/Kardon 10 speaker system. Actually my wife uses the Bimmer and has HER Ipod with HER music and that suits me just fine. Like I said earlier I use the FM device by Griffin and it works very fine for me. MUCH better than that goofy cassette adaptor with the mouse tail hanging ouf of the dash. If you like and have lots of music go for the Ipod besides you can take it with you and enjoy it every where. It's a no brainer . . .

Signal to noise ratios determine sound quality.Cassette beats FM.Yes tapes do give a little hiss but overall the quality is better.Don't believe me? Look at the specs on any aftermarket car stereo.

GASNET ... um, that's fine, but the integrated setup still sounds significantly better than tape deck.

Perhaps in your car but the two cassette units I tried were terrible. Even the tape transport noise was invasive. After use the units developed some bad karma with the tape head and the hiss and scratchiness got worse and worse on both cassettes. One a sony and one a belkins. Enough was enough. Got the Griffin FM and been happy ever since. So if you're pushing cassette devices do it with a proviso. . .
