Is it safe to get an Remote Start for my 05?

I have heard some bad things about getting an Remote Start installed in the TL (messing with the electrical system). Would it be a smart move to go ahead and get it? Looking for any suggestions....

I installed my own remote starter on my 6MT 2005 TL. Let me say that it wasn't easy but it's definitely doable. I don't see it messing with the electronics as long as it's a reputable manufacturer. My remote starter has been working perfectly.

I'll be posting up a HOWTO on how I did my install pretty soon. I have lots of pics.

My only concern would be the presence of an additional key in the car with the chip allowing the car to be started. Thieves could bypass the ignition kill.

Other than not, no major concerns.

Thanks for the feedback. You're right, I am a little worried about leaving an active key in the car, especially living in Jersey.

Yeah I would not feel comfortable leaving a key in the car.

You don't have to leave a key in the car. I bought a box which learns the key code and then transmits it to the ECU when necessary. Much better option in my opinion.

DEI makes a 556U Transponder Kit

Bypass the OEM transponder anti-theft systems found on many newer vehicles including the new General Motors Pass-Key 3 and Honda Immoblizer systems. Only bypasses factory anti-theft systems during remote starting, keeping the factory system intact at all other times. This is an updated version of the 555U with Key Sense input and selectable transponder ring configurations making it compatible with many European vehicles. Simple two to six-wire connection for easy installation.

Silver, I think the 556U kit needs a key to be embedded. The picture looks like it has a ring that wraps around the ignition (key hole) which is a sloppy way of doing it compared to the autotoys unit I used. The autotoys unit connects to the wires coming from the ignition and it's a lot cleaner. I'll be posting pics of my entire install soon and the link will be in my sig.

DEI also makes the 556H, which is like the PKH3, and can learn the code from a key (and thus does not need an embedded key.)

What I'm still unclear on, has anyone installed a remote starter and KEPT the Driver 1 / Driver 2 functionality?

I don't mind have 2 remotes... 1 for remote starting and the factory remote for driver1/2, unlocking, alarm, but my wife & I both drive our TL and we have very different settings for seat, music, etc so I can't lose the Driver 1 / Driver 2 capability.

Thanks.

incorrect

if you did what i did and use the factory remote to remote start the car then everything would still be there. if you use aftermarket remotes then you can not use the memory settings

If you own a 6SPD MT, then I highly recommend the CompuStar. First Remote Start that was meant for a Manual transmission.

The Spread Spectrum has a wonderful range on it but it is not as reliable as it should be.

My buddy who is a Authorized seller and installer for CompuStar recommends the 2W900FM.

Which model do you have? The CompuStar has alot and I mean alot of things you can do with it. Love how it pages you if the car has been tampered with. I used to have in my 2000 Prelude MT. Went to my buddy apt for a party when I had the Lude, Shock Sensor Warning was triggered and it paged me. Most of my friends has the CompuStar so when they heard the Paging Beep on the transmitter, they knew what it meant. My buddys and I ran out to find some kid was looking at my car and started to walk away slowly. Poor kid almost spoiled his pants when he saw all of us. He had to of either bump it pretty hard or try to open the door, cause I didnt have the shock sensor set high at all. We all know how Annoying it is when a plane goes by and it sets off a alarm or you parked your car next to someone and they have there darn alarm set soo sensitive, it beeps just from you closing your door.

How does the CompuStar remote starter work on the manual trans? Does it require you to set the parking brake, activate the remote starter, shut off the key (the engine remains running), open/close the door & set the alarm/lock the doors (this shuts the engine off) to set it?

I am a Crimestopper dealer & they used to have a remote starter for manual trans cars, but they quit making it. I get alot of requests for manual trans starters, and would like to pick up a reliable product. The Clifford Smart Remote Start 4 had the same setup, but they stopped making it when they were acqired by DEI. It was a decent system, but expensive for a dealer to buy.

Pretty Much Exactly what you said. Once the E-Brake is set and is in N, it activates the Safety Process to be able to start the car. Take key out and open the door, Car remains started until door has been closed then Alarm (If available) activates and engine turns off.

Oops I meant car turns off Then Arms the Alarm

If you did that, wouldn't it only work on the remote that you programmed the autostart for? Or would the autostart work with either remote in this case?

the remote start has no idea which remote is doing the work, so in this case either remote will work

the way the remote start works is by something sending a signal to the box 3 times(in my case i hooked it to the remote lock signal, so when you press lock 3 times it starts the car)

does your driver recognition system still work (adjusts the seat and mirror position based on the remote the driver is using) with the new remotes. my last acura had a remote start and it worked with both the factory key fobs and the after market ones (the only thing was once the car was remote started you could only unlock the doors wih a key). Any way around this?

I am curious about this too... I'd LOVE to get the factory remote to do something like this, or maybe even to do something differnet altogether, but ANY info re: using the factory remote to gain additional options would be appreciated.

I own a compustar FM model on my Integra, very nice setup, pager alarm, and has "reserve" mode for the MT, so it knows its in neutral, and starts next time you auto start.

Its pricey and I dont know if you can incorportate it into the OEM remote.

For those that wire the remote start, with the use of the OEM remote like some delearships do, would I be able to do the same thing on a MT 04 but also add a ground to the e-brake, so if its not up than the car won't start as a backup?

I have an 04 TL with remote start that also mimics the factory window down, door unlock, trunk release, and panic. Been using it every day for over a year. Biggest complaint is that the TL sometimes requires more cracnking (when cold) to start than the remote system allows. So if it doesn't turn over the first time, the remote does it again 30 seconds later. Not the end of the world. More annoying than anything else.

As a rule of thumb though, remote starts (idling) are not the best way to warm up ANY car. Best way is to drive it. But when it's 20 degrees out (or 90 in the summer) it sure is a nice convenience, especially when you have little kids.
