Rookie basics - IPOD Video thru Navi System

Gentlemen, this rookie has spent considerable amount of time doing research on this great website on how to play videos via the nav system. Just finished going through 409posts trying to get more info. I own a AT05/TL w/Nav and want to play videos from my IPOD in the car. I do alot of traveling in and out the car so, the ipod is my best bet for all music and videos. I know I need a video and audio converter. Apparently that is what the dom's unit, tvandnav2go, etc are for. I've seen some great mods in this forum, with external dvd players, media hardrives, etc... More $$$ and time that I'm willng to spend. Can someone please list for me the items that I would need to purchase in order to do this. I know Extreme Mac Audio Cables is one of the 1st things I need. Pls give suggestions on other neccessary items needed to get started.

I don't own a video iPod, but here is my swing at it:
1) iPod video
2) Dom's TVandNav2Go (+PnP harness)
3) Aux-input (PIE X3, Blitzsafe HON/AUX DMX)
4) iPod to video/audio RCA out cable

You won't have any integrated features with this setup though (no steering wheel controls, charging, etc).

Another option, is to use the Valor iLink. Details can be found here: 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ

IPOD to Nav

datmrman, tks for the list and the link. Did some extra searches on suggested link re:ILink. It doesn't play MPEG4, requires remote to function, but sounds like wheel controls still work?? Correct???. Anyone know if Dustin at tech support found a fix for MPEG4 issue yet? So, w/Ilink I still need tvandnav2go, PiE3?? Anyone have any other suggestions?? All info is much appreciated!!!

Its been done before, it works

Like datmrman stated you need:
1) iPod video $300-$349
2) Dom's TVandNav2Go (+PnP harness) $240
3) Aux-input (PIE X3, Blitzsafe HON/AUX DMX, USAspec) $79-$140
4) iPod AV Cables (all over ebay) $10-$35

Thats what I'm using in my car right now

So couldnt I just get this instead of buying the HON 2 Y thing ? i could play videos and the music through this thing, but just wouldnt have the controls on the steering wheel and radio. i could only control it on the ipod itself (which is fine for me).

I have Doms unit in my car now with a DVD player running to the nav screen. But i want to change the way my sound process's through the headunit. right now i have a fm modulator and like the safe blitz thing.

It would be awesome to get the iPhone to hook up to the nav screen. Youtube, web, etc.

You could still have steering wheel controls, just use an ipod adapter such as the UsaSpec. All you need to have is the ipod a/v cables also connected to the headphone jack. You won't need to use the L/R rcas on the cable because the audio will be used from the dock connector (which will be much better).

If it has video out, then it shouldn't be much different than an iPod video. There are currently two open threads on the iPhone with the 3G TL. Please ask questions in their appropriate threads. Thanks.

PIE makes a cable called the AV-POD cable its basically a a/v cable that connects to the bottom of your ipod and charges your ipod while you watch videos through the PIE X3 / DOMS- UNIT, iths how i have my setup done and its perfect in my opinion, i was going to do a DIY on my setup and after i got done i realized i didnt take enough pics while doing the install. but it works like a charm and the av-pod cable only cost 30$

PM me if you want to know more

or you can buy a shadow kit from radioshack for 24 bucks that has all the stuff for it plus more such as a car and wall charger. I will have to post a DIY on how to incoperate the IPOD VIEDO into the TL.

I have the USA SPEC HON2Y and it works prefectly. I use the controls on the steering wheel alot and the USA SPEC is configurable so you can use the IPOD controls or the HU controls at the same time. It also charges the ipod to and pauses it when you shut of the radio or when HFL comes into play.

i thaught the USA SPEC HON2Y has skipping issues have those been resolved ? i would like to controll from stering wheele too, but not at the cost of skipping...

and dont you have to use a cigarett lighter plug on this ? its not as convenient as having a seperate 12v run to the fuse box. Datmrman knows whats up.

I perfer my way only because it looks nice and clean with one cable doing all the work...

i know this sounds little stupid question, but where do you need to operate in order to have 'ipod video to navi mods'? does radio unit need to come off? does anyone have pictures of operation?

Sounds like the video iPod and the iPhone can't be viewed on the Nav screen without paying hundreds of dollars - right?

250 to view it and another 100-150 to listen to it and iphone wont work at all because apple didnt incorporate a video output. im sad about it too buddy.

i suppose you could use a device simmilar to the ones used on psp's to get them connected to a bigger tv, but man its hideouse and not made for the iphone specs. like th etouch screen and all the butons lol.

Progress as in? Theres plenty of threads on iPod (video) integration. A good place to start is 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ.

I found this thread through the FAQ. What I didnt see was someone post the DIY install instructions. CSmenace said he would earlier in this thread. Hence me asking about progress on this

This install involves a lot of similar parts as my mediagate install (just swap the mediagate A/V cable with the iPod video cable).

The DIY: DIY: Backup Camera with Dom's TVandNav2Go PNP Install

TVandNav2Go, Mediagate MG-25P, and PIE X3 Installed

All audio interfaces plug into the same plug in the back of the head unit. If you don't want a backup camera, then skip those parts. Otherwise, you'll be disassembling the same parts of the car.

Is there a way to do the install without the cigarette lighter style power adapter?

What is it that you want to install?

Power can be provided via cigarette power adapter, tapping into fuse under the drivers side kick panel, connecting it directly to the battery (for aftermarket amps). If you simply just need an outlet style connection, look into power inverters.

Dom is still around. Check out the black market. There is a thread for "TVandNav2Go is back with a special sale"

I plan to hookup my ipod touch to my nav sometime soon. Video will be through Dom's unit, but for audio I am waiting. I think many of the cables offered now do not support the new video/audio out connector for the new ipods.

Welcome to the forums ErnRenner. Have you tried checking out the 3G TL Audio & Electronics FAQ and/or performing a search for ipod video? I'm sure you will find lots of good info. Dom + DICE/USA Spec is a good combo for you.

Also, it says the AV POD will not display video for the new nano.... can anyone comment on this. I don't see the different since the new nane has video output.

The new ipods output video significantly differently from the older ones. The old cables may not work with the new ipods for video out. You can find more info at:

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...ew.html&page=2

Also, only apple currently sells a video out cable for the new ipods. I have an ipod touch and plan to use it for video in my TL. Using apple's composite cable (not component) I can connect the audio to the Aux in something like Dice and send video to Dom's. I haven't done this myself yet, but I don't see why this wouldn't work.

For audio only, I should be able to use something like Dice connected to the dock connector directly. No video though. Some ipods might be locked out in this mode, depending on settings. My ipod touch isn't, but I believe some ipods might be.

Sooo, I've been trying to keep up with the various post about ipod/iphone integration. I've got the newest gen ipod nano and am getting an iphone very soon. The car is a 05 TL w/navi. My goal is to have the best connection from ipod to car for both audio and video.

I understand from post that he peripheral unit is the best for ipod intergration becuase it can display artist/track names and be controled from the steering wheel. My concern is that once the ipod/iphone is plugged into the peripheral adapter that I can't get video from the ipod. Does anyone know if there is a unit that can function as well as the peripheral for audio while also providing a video out that could go to, say, doms unit?

After seeing the $30 cord that provides video out (earlier post) it seems that a maufacture such as peripheral would intergrate a the video out into their units, right? Anyone know if that's coming soon?

See my email conversation below with someone from Peripheral. Guess the answer to my question in my post above is 'no' from Peripheral. Anyone know another brand that could offer such?

Email 1:
Looking for a unit like the PXAMG for my acura and iphone, but would also like the video out (RCA) ability of your IS76 cord for ipods. Can you make a ipod cord for the PXAMG that also provides the RCA video out? Want to play videos from my ipod/iphone on my acura TL navi screen.

Response:
What you can do is use the IS76 and the AUX input from our PXAMG which will work just fine.

Email 2:
There's a problem with that option. There are other units available that are much cheaper in price that provide simple RCA intergration to the factor unit. The PXAMG unit provides text display and steering wheel control in the Acura TL for ipods. That's what makes it better than the competition in my opinion. However, the one hold-up is that when the iphone or ipod is plugged into the PXAMG then the port on the ipod is taken to allow any other adapeter to connect for video out. I could add the IS76 to the aux input on the PXAMG unit, but I would be switching the ipod back and fouth from one harness that provides text/steering wheel functions (not to mention also charging) to another that provides the video out rca that I need. After seeing that you provide the IS76 for video out I thought it should be simple to create a hybrid of the standard ipod cord that works with the PXAMG and the new IS76. Maybe that's in the works? Need a volunteer to test it out for you?

Response:
Unfortunately that is the only option we offer for that type of function.

I have an Ipod touch and a 5th Gen Ipod video. I can play videos with the composite cable with the 5th gen to my tv just fine but NOT with the ipod touch. Apple included circuitry to prevent this in all the new ipods. The only two ways around it is to use an Apple dock with your regular composite cable or buy the Apple approved cable.

You are right on your last point as well. With the Dice unit, the Ipod touch is unlocked but with my 5th gen, it is locked. Another thing I noticed on my touch, it will pause and pick up where it left off on the song when I leave the car. It wouldn't do that with my 5th gen at all.
