Removing Navigation Unit from 04 TL

I am trying to install a Wired FM Modulator unit for a sirius radio that I installed in my dads 2004 TL. I cant figure out how to remove the navigation unit so that I can access the radio antenna wire. Maybe there is another place to access the antenna wire in the car? So far I pulled off the metal trim on both sides of the radio, but I dont see how to get out the unit so I can get to the antenna. I would prefer to get access the antenna wire without taking out the navigation

Welcome to the forums.

Your best option is to pull out the navi - there are several screws holding it in behind the metal strips. I was able to get to it by pulling out the glove compartment and reaching behind the panels - but it is a royal PITA to do that.

You can also access the antenna from behind the side airbag on the drivers rear side of the car. I would not suggest doing this as you would have to work around the airbag - don't want to screw that up.

If you search, there are threads on how to do this in more detail - and you may find some scanned images from the service manual on how to pull out the navi.

It's all in this thread towards the end of the scans.

Lots of work and be careful with the aluminum trim when you remove it.

Good luck with your project.

Hmm

So it seems like I only really need to take off the aluminum trim, pop out the vent panel from the center console, remove some screws around the area, and I should be able to pop out the navi? I basically had all that done, but I cant seem to remove the vent housing. Do you really need that special vent removal tool, or is there something else I can use..

DO NOT REMOVE THE NAVI!! THERE IS NO NEED, I DID THE SAME INSTALL.. YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE RIGHT PANEL AND THE GLOVE BOX. YOU CAN THEN GET YOUR HAND AROUND THERE TO GET TO THE ANTENNA. I HAVE BIG HANDS AND WAS ABLE TO DO IT..

Removing the vent is pretty easy to do - it feel slike you are going to break it - but the clips are just doing a damn good job of holding it in place.
