Removed stock sub... What a difference!
I took the car apart yesterday for a couple reasons. I noticed my bass sounded distorted even at moderate volumes and flat out wasn't as clean as a couple of W6s should be. I could see the rear deck vibrating even though I couldn't hear any rattling. I also thought that with the hole to the trunk in the seat closed the W6s might make the stock sub bottom out. I popped the trunk and listened to it and the subs were obviously not distorting.
First, I removed the seats and the deck cover and reinstalled the seat so I could watch what happens with the stock sub. I turned the volume up and the stock sub which is disconnected was really moving, probably close to it's limit. Bass did sound better with the deck cover off. Out came the sub. While I was in there I banged on different places and noticed the center seatbelt made a ton of noise so that came out too. Since my rear deck cover was vibrating even with some dynamat, I folded a towel in half and put it between the cover and deck. This sort of preloaded the cover so hopefully it wouldn't vibrate.
This totally exceeded my expectations. Bass is so much tighter and clean now. It feels like I picked up a little volume too. I had no idea the stock sub made it sound so crappy. After hearing the difference I would consider this mandatory for anyone who runs aftermarket subs facing to the rear.
The only problem now is that while watching what my subs did to the stock sub, I also noticed they make the stock mids in the deck move a lot. I confirmed this by turning the subs off at the same volume. This can't be good for sound quality so when the time comes to replace them I will have to find some way to box them in.
