I went to a shop, they told me they could'nt (legally) install a remote starter system in my car cuz' it's manual transmission. They said if left in gear, It could jump through a wall or something when I try to start it. True or not?

There are remote starters legal for manual transmission applications. I have one installed in mine, the compustar 2W900FM-AS (with alarm). Also available without alarm (2W900FM-S).

Its not that its a state law legal issue, but a liability issue if you do remote start it while in gear. It will jump, it doesn't matter if you have the brake on or not. A friend of mine that owns a local shop, started his BMW and it jump across 6 lanes of traffic and parked itself in to a house. Another friend had one, and his brother was playing with it, it jumped into there house.

In order to get a remote start to work right on a manual transmission car, you have to bypass the clutch. The problem with this is the fact that you can start the car with out the clutch being pressed in. Even if you use safety features like using the ground wire that comes off the ebrake, you still can have a car jump. I am an installer and never liked putting them on other peoples MT cars. Its really bad when you go to look at the car and see that they have left it in gear and don't use the ebrake.

Having a remote start requires a person to change personal habits when it comes to MT cars. I personally never leave a MT car in gear nor do I leave mine in gear, I always use the ebrake. This is a habit every MT driver should do. The problem is a lot do not, they just leave it in first or reverse. I have not yet installed one on my car, I have been debating about it for the last year, as I like the window role up from the key and I have just the Accord key, so no fob. With the way the heat has set in this summer, I think I am going to be adding one soon.

That is exactly why you buy a MT specific remote start unit (like the one I have from compustar, as mentioned in an earlier post). There is a special safety sequence required to put the car into "reservation mode" which allows the car to be remote started. This sequence makes it IMPOSSIBLE to start the car while it's in gear barring a malfunction. The car must be put in neutral, the brake and clutch released, and the parking brake set. When the keys are removed from the ignition, it stays running until the door is shut, unless this sequence isn't followed, in which case the car shuts off. Let's say you left the car in gear, then when you removed your foot from the clutch, the car would stall (when you get out of the car, the car is still running, so you'd have to keep your foot on the clutch to prevent it from stalling).

I am planning to get a remote starter too. I have some questions about installing it.

Does installing a remote starter void Warranty?

Do we have to do with the dealer to keep the warranty?

Can we install it ourselves or outside?

Thanks

I installed my own remote starter, and I installed first the Compustar top of the line spread spectrum one and really didn't like it, so I took it out and put in the Viper 791XV which I love.

I have a MT car, but I put in a failsafe on the hand brake. On my girlfriend and I drive the car and we both do not leave it in gear.

Installing a remote starter does not void the warranty unless they can prove that the starter caused the problem you are reporting.

I just has the dealer install a remote start on my 06 TL. Charged me $500.00 which I think is excessive but what's done is done. My only issue is now I had a second key fob - dealer says they can't program my Acura key fob to remotely start the car - I have to have 2 in order to have remote start. I don't believe them..........but can't find anything to contradict what they are telling me.

I installed my own starter. I used the Viper 791XV. Awesome machine. I only have one fob. I don't use the Acura fob anymore. And my memory seats and mirrors still work.

You can get it for about $200 shipped. Check pricegrabber.com. Search for 791XV. And yes, it has a full-featured alarm as well.

On mine the Valet key had to be embedded into the engine somewhere in order for the remote starter to work.

I don't trust Valet parkers anyway so I also try to park myself and take my keys.

I'm surprised companies are still embedding the valet key when there are better options (bypass boxes).

Ive heard pretty bad stories where it actually hit a person. Before you shut the car off you need to follow through with a sequence to bypass the clutch like Black TL was saying. I leave my car in neutral withthe ebrake up all the time, other than when there is a ridiculous incline, which in my town is rare. I hear the remote starters have a negative effect on that but Im not sure as to the validity of that, Id have to look into it...

Can you guys help me? Im in NY and before I purchase the Viper 791XV, I want to know a place that can install it... I just called up ten different places that I could think of. None of them will do it unless I buy their alarm.

Scoshe 2-way...same as Compustar, packaged differently.

Didnt lose a key, used 2 expresskits modules to control door locks, windows, trunk, and by pass...

Works like a charm...of course my Car Audio shop did it...

I also like AutoPage, but they dont make a MT unit..
